I played BG Enchantress for Game Day. Verdict decks put on the fun brakes, but the deck is fun as hell to play otherwise. Here's the list for those interested. I lost in top 4 to a hexproof deck that I beat in the swiss.

    4 Brain Maggot
    4 Sylvan Caryatid
    4 Courser of Kruphix
    2 Herald of Torment
    4 Boon Satyr
    4 Eidolon of Blossoms

    Spells - 14
    3 Thoughtseize
    2 Abrupt Decay
    2 Devour Flesh
    1 Golgari Charm
    2 Hero's Downfall
    1 Pharika
    2 Underworld Connections
    1 Primeval Bounty

    Lands - 24
    4 Temple of Malady
    4 Overgrown Tomb
    2 Temple of Deceit
    1 Temple of Plenty
    1 Temple of Mystery
    6 Swamp
    6 Forest

    Sideboard
    2 Duress
    1 Erebos

We won a few standard win a boxes in side events, I got my Deathrite Shamans signed by the artist. Same artist did Liliana of the Veil and a different buddy got them altered with 4 different Leia outfits
    Great trip all in all
Sucks that your buddy missed Day 2. That GP was stacked since it was in the same city as the PT the week before.

I always recommend that people who want to get back into the game try drafting (assuming you have a store nearby you that runs drafts). Here's a guide: http://www.gatheringmagic.com/meliss...e-to-drafting/

Drafting is great because you don't need to have cards ahead of time like constructed and you get to open packs.

Some dude a few seats away dropped tournament for grabbing about $30 worth of rare in 3 cards + whatever else he didn't think was worth mentioning in the pool he was supposed to register. In all the excitement, he left before they handed out the batterskull promo

I actually was sitting next to Saito once when he did this. I think he opened a foil Elspeth Knights Errant and then dropped because of it. I was like, "Really!? Don't you own a game shop and have 14 sets of P9 BB?".

No way in hell I'd travel 15 hours to drop before a tourney started...

Sad part is that promo is worth $20 - $25 bucks on the right site.

Went to Modern League at my local card store tonight. Wanted to make an infect deck, bought 2 Besieged, 2 Scars, and two I forget because they didn't have the New Phyrexia. Got a foil Vatmother and other amazing Infect cards. Went 9/0 in Musical Chairs, was the only infect deck too.

are any of those event decks in circulation worth picking up? i'm always tempted by them but i have no idea what's actually good. my friends tend to play a lot of green/creature-heavy decks, so if there's anything in the prefab selections out there that serve as a good base for countering that style of play, i'd definitely be open to suggestion.

really i'd like to build something of my own, but between a lack of time and being overwhelmed at how much shit is out there after having out of the game for so long (and i am wary of spending much on it right now as i have no idea how long we'll all keep at it) it's kind of hard to muster the energy.

Any particular format or do you guys just build decks out of whatever cards you have lying around?

more or less the latter. no format in particular, we've mostly just bought the cheapo prefabs from recent sets and modified them with random shit we pull from boosters. thus far i think most everything has come from ravnica/born of the gods/theros and maybe gatecrash? and i have some nyx stuff i picked up a couple weekends ago.

personally i'm hoping i can ransack my mom's old storage unit at some point because i'm pretty sure my old cards are still in there somewhere. tons and tons of stuff from unlimited up thru mirage, but for now i'm not exactly banking on that prospect.

The Born of the Gods mono B event deck seems to be a good place to start if your friends are all running green fatty decks. Basically any type of cheap removal like Doom Blade, Ultimate Price, Banishing Light etc do very well against big creature decks. Bile Blight works well against mana elves (except Sylvan Caryatid). The Born of the Gods event deck has 8 pieces of removal.

sweet, thanks! the decklist looks pretty interesting, and i had a $25 gift card on amazon, so i cashed it in on one of those. mono is very appealing too, as i feel like tweaking a mono deck should be a bit more approachable with a more limited field to choose from.

I know it's a longshot here, but I'm looking for 2 Dark Confidants for PTQ season if anyone has 'em for trade.

Just play alot of games, and learn how the stack works. I'd say get to know someone who plays either legacy or modern and ask to playtest with them, as those formats require a lot of practice and understanding of game mechanics.

to expand on this, since it might not be apparent:

the mana curve has to do with how much mana your spells cost. if you have a lot of big spells, like 5-7 mana, but very few 1-4 mana spells, your mana curve is bad and you're probably going to get killed before you can get your deck working. you want to weight your curve to be heavier on 1-4 mana spells, with only a few really, really powerful 5-7. also, your signature spells (the one that made you decide "I want to build a deck around this") can be in either end, but if they're in the 5-7 range, you usually need to design your 1-4 range to either let you get it out faster, with lots of mana-gain abilities or fetching, or you need to design it to stay alive long enough to get it out. Most games start to get deadly at around turn 4-5. If you don't have some sort of defense in place by then, you're probably not going to survive.

also, part of the mana curve is that you usually want more 1-2 mana spells than 3-4, more 3-4 than 5-7, etc. It is possible to deviate from that, but you have to do other things to compensate.

Yeah I saw gogglehead's comment last night and looked it up, and found thousands of comments that were long and drawn out - unlike yours. Though I eventually figured it out, I took one of the decks I made and got
    CMC | # of cards
    1 | 4
    2 | 8
    3 | 7
    4 | 12
    5 | 4

First few games was a lot heavier on big cards, trimmed it down, but I feel like I need more instants that stop creatures from being instantly destroyed, cards that help fill out my mana pool faster, or, just generally, more cards with 1-2 mana cost. I've only got about 6 Theros booster packs and Green and Red to draw from. I'd like to fill out my collection more but I'd rather see if I can buy some bulk modern 1-2s.
