So I don't play Standard, but I wanna enter game day for shits and giggles. I figured I'd just build a stock Abzan deck, but I'm missing Ugin/Garruk at the top end. Should I just jam a third Elspeth and roll with that?
the primary wincon was to swing with emrakul + griselbrand by turn 2, which it did pretty reliably. tendrils was in the sideboard in case the reanimation combo didn't fire for whatever reason, but at least in the matches i played/watched it never came out.

definitely changing out jin-gitaxias for sire of insanity for the next time i go back. i don't know why it didn't occur to me before, but even giving one turn with a functional hand is too much breathing room to allow in that format.

Played Abzan Control for Game Day just to scoop up the foil Thunderbreak Regents. Top 4'd one Game Day and won another one giving the mat to some little kid.

I gotta say that even though I don't like Standard, I really like playing this deck. Siege Rhino is such a stupid card.

Rhino made me a believer this weekend. Took Abzan Aggro to SCG Providence and almost day 2'd that bitch. Started 5-1-1 but lost two win & ins. Still the deck performed fantastic I'm really happy with it.

When Rhinko was printed, my friends and I were brewing at the time. I was like, yeah this card has to be good right? I just kept staring at it like, this card is definitely good right? Reaper of the wilds was supposed to be good but ended up being garbage. So another 4mana 4/5 was like, maybe this will end up being bad. That and wingmate roc. I was also like, this card has to be good right? With the people I play with, I can't really make good card evaluations because we don't ever play test very well and it's grueling to try to evaluate cards realistically with them.

Rhino was an easy pickup for me. A 4/5 trample body is decent for the cost but the Lightning Helix really makes it a sweet deal, especially for control grinding out that incremental advantage.

Wingmate just felt a clunky shoehorn that /worked/ but felt like it made for silly tempo and never had the presence to do much. And now with Khans it just gets BTFO by dragons everywhere.

I love siding in Wingmate against burn decks, or any deck that runs Roast. I fucking hate Roast so much

I'd much rather pick something like Nyx-Fleece that rapidly outpaces burn if unchecked and demands something like Roast or blowing a spell + critter to answer. Surge of Righteousness also can do solid work to clear off Rabblemaster.

Currently playing Esper Dragons and despite bad matchup against monored it does have options like Virulent Plague, Drown in Sorrow, and Foul-Tongue Invocation that can be a backbreaker if they come in on time.

    Best part? Roast-proof.

I found Wingmate to be amazing when he is raided and awful when he's just a 5 mana 3/4.

Across the 3 burn players that I played on game day, I never found Roast all that bad. I got value off of all my creatures and my opponent had to play something at sorcery speed (Rhino - helix, Courser - land off the top, Tasigur - card in my yard). Plus, if they want to dilute their deck by putting in removal for my creatures, I'm fine with that too.

I gotta say Tasigur really surprised me. Unlike Rhino which you just look at the card and know it's good, it wasn't until the first time that I played a Tasigur that I realized how good he was. I played it off of B against a RG dragons guy and he wasn't able to kill him so I got one activation off. Then the next few turns were just him throwing dorks in front of tasigur while I'm getting 2 activations a turn until he finally uses a haven to get back Atarka. He has to play the Atarka just to kill Tasigur into the many removal spells in my hand that he gave back to me to avoid giving me a rhino. It felt so unfair that this effect is on a 4/5 body.

Thinking about getting back into physical-Standard Magic. Anyone with collections to sell? I haven't really bought standard cards since right after Stoneforge went out of standard.

I would avoid picking up anything in Theros Block with it rotation in a couple months unless you want to play Modern and some of the other formats and need the cards(Thoughtseize/fetches comes to mind).

Fetches are good until Spring next year in Standard though; not in Theros block.

I'm having trouble thinking of good deck ideas that don't run anything from Theros block, though. Not sure exactly how well you'll do by limiting yourself completely. Probably best to set a limit on how much to spend from that block, instead.

Siege Rhino. The thing that finally pushed Birthing Pod into getting banned.

Good, that card was boring as hell to play with and against.

So two things right quick. One, the new Modern Masters packs that were previewed said Magic on them but were missing the words, "the Gathering" from the logo. Two, Path to Exile is the July FNM promo. Which means that Path is most likely in MM2015, and that the next few FNM Promo's after this one should be Modern based.

what's usually involved in getting the FNM promos? is it just a matter of showing up and registering?

i wouldn't mind another set of paths, but at minimum i'd have to put something together for standard. not really sure if it's worth the hassle or not since i traded out of all of my good standard stuff a month or two ago.

4 are given out a week, but stores do them differently. Some give them out to top 4 like Krandor said. Another store by me gives 2 out to top 2 and the other 2 go to random people.
