I need to trade or sell my Gideon before he goes down in value. Maybe I can find someone who wants it bad enough to trade me a fetch land or two for it.

There is a dude who plays at our shop that looks like a straight crackfiend. He sells me 3 fetches per $20 on a regular basis. I have no idea how he gets them or why he doesn't sell them for more (the store would offer him more). You flash a $20 in the dude's vicinity and he will trade you anything for it lol.

My LGS had to kick someone out of the last pre-release because they were so stinky and they looked homeless he even had his pregnant girlfriend with him and they lived in their car. They made a big scene but they were being disruptive to the tournament. They shouldn't have spent money on magic...

I need to find myself a crackfiend who will sell me cards cheap.

I'm talking no teeth, meth scars level of crackfiend, but the fucker always has good cards for sell on the down low. He doesn't just steal and come to sell either, he drafts and shows up to prereleases regularly, etc.

He is one of those "check out my vampire deck" players who I think just doesn't care about how good a card may be.

I drew the line at being offered a $40 JTMS playset that had bongwater spilled on them by some skeezeball. No amount of febreeze and pine trees could ever fix that level of stank.

But I do remember trading a 40 of jack to some 18 year old for an Italian The Abyss.

Man, I have some really lopsided ones in my days lol. I swear to God (I don't believe, but still!), I traded $0.25 cent rares on 4 occasions for FOIL Rishardan Ports. How and where? AOL "MTG Trading" chat room. As like a 12 year old in the 99 JSS championships, I was rocking a full foil Replenish deck with those 4 foil Ports haha.

Oh, the same tournament is where they gave away Foil Gaea's Cradle signed by Garfield to anyone who went on a "Magic Tour". No one really went because they didn't advertise the cards. I got 8 that day for literally almost nothing (my family went with me obviously).

That chat room literally yielded me about +$20k in cards going by today's values.

I think I spammed "Trading for Foil Rishadan Port / Masticore" 400 times a day back then. I'm trying to think of a better trade I've made, but don't think I can. Oh, I bought someone's collection on here for like $500 and the playset of Jaces alone basically covered that. Got a ton of fetches for free basically including foil ones.

I think the best deals I have gotten were buying sets that were stacked with value for cheap on craigslist a few years ago before MTG really started to explode. You could still find good deals. Like $100 for a box that had two good condition unlimited Underground Seas and a few onslaught fetch lands. Or $100 for the box of cards with a legends Eureka and a playset of Force of Wills (plus a bunch of other value) or $50 for a box with a playset of wastelands and a bunch of revised duals.

I miss the days when I could find deals like that.

In case anyone was wondering I did tell those people what they had and they just didn't care they wanted to get rid of the cards fast and easy.

I cannot stand white knights that have a problem with the opposite. If someone is too fucking stupid to use the internet for 8 seconds, that is on them.

Yeah I am not vilifying people who don't do that. These were older people who had the cards from a long time ago so I felt better telling them. When I buy collections or sell collections to obviously current players I negotiate hard to get the best deal I can. I don't lie or anything though.

These are the competitive decks I've played the most (typically, I stick to a single deck in a format and would adjust it week-to-week given the meta):

    1. Necro
    2. Jank (Bolt/Chain Lighting/White Knight/Armageddon)
    3. Replenish
    4. Cad Bloom
    5. Survival + Recurring Nightmare (forgot if it had a name)
    6. Jund
    7. Academy when it was actually playable
    8. Cawblade
    9. Mythic Conscription

Replenish is easily my favorite competitive deck of all-time. Magic's very best Standard metagame ever was during this time. I think it was something like:

    Red Deck Wins (Jackal Pup)
    Ponza (Land Destruction)
    Mono Blue Control (Morphling/Dismiss/Powder Keg)
Replinish Combo (Fade Enchantments / Replinish)
Green Stompy (Echo creatures + Plow Under)
    White Rebels
    Big Red (I think?)

This is the type of format Wizards should strive for in Standard, instead of the shit they have put out the last several years.

Edit: holy shit this is bringing back rage moments of getting Plow Under cast against me on like turn 3....

It was extremely solid meta diversity up to around...Apocalypse and then afterwards going through various stages of poop.

Damn I can still vividly remember Nemesis prerelease and I drafted a Tanglewire and having the local hotshot during the final round call a judge because I was tapping it as part of the upkeep and the judge taking his side because "only artifacts with a tap ability can be tapped". I called bullshit and pulled out a Winter Orb to counter and they couldn't put out an answer. Managed to get myself ejected for that too for losing my cool.

Wow. I just got re-salty over a game that happened almost 16 years ago.

Lol!!! I remember tons of "you can tap tangle wire to tangle wire" articles on that old magic website...the dojo or something.

Rememver Ring of Giz being $30 and the first sought after foil at around $100? That shit tanked faster than any rare ever.

I don't know what happened since then, but foils looked a helllllllllll of a lot better back then. You could blind a motherfucker with foil Avalance riders back in the day!

    Edit: oh god, speaking of rage, remember capsize + buyback -.-;;;

Recurring Nightmare/Survival of the Fittest was the SHIT. God I loved that fucking deck back in the day.

I've pretty much always played variations of white weenie, with some side decks of legacy Reanimator and Pod when it was standard/modern legal. I have a general dislike of playing blue so it limits alot of my deck options. Only time I really went in on blue was that glorious week or two of standard legal Tolarian Academy.

Weltall, I'd probably add Dragonlord Atarka to your list, and definitely chandra. (she's an absolute beast)

Curious on your thoughts about why Kozilek will be good, so far he hasn't really experienced any play, and 10 mana is really difficult to pull off.. and losing rattleclaws isn't going to help that.

Yeah, I knew I was forgetting some important cards. Those were just ones I throw out. I will add Chandra and Atarka. I also agree that Kozilek gets worse; I didn't look up which cards were rotating out of that deck.

    Updated the list.

Also, this guy seems really good with DeathMist/DenProtector in a Collected Company build. Not sure if playing black over white and losing reflector mage is worth it though:

That guy also makes Risen Executioner good/playable and is in the same colors. Could even go Esper if you want Reflector Mage.
