Probably won't matter to some, but Un-cards are legal in EDH until (at least?) January 15th.

I don't play EDH, but the spikes at my store that basically treat the format like lite are LIVID.
What an absolutely ridiculous ruling. It is clearly because the awful product won’t sell.
Unsets are traditionally not the greatest sellers due to well a lot of the cards just being unplayable with normal cards even more casual formats like cubes and commander. While the others while nice additions to those never allowed in competitive except I guess steamflogger or whatever it's called now lol. But this one has looked to be more popular and well fun so I'd predict it would be more popular in comparison in general.
On the other hand sales seem to have been lagging in general lately. There has been a bit of loss of confidence in both just the physical quality of the cards in recent years that doesn't appear to being addressed as well as in design and subsequent which is somewhat getting addressed but no one likes repeated bannings even if they are necessary. Not exactly the end of the game predictions you see from some youtubers but there is some trouble in paradise. So it's not really much surprise wotc doing some promotional stuff like that. Or the weird explorers thing even promoting arena instead of fixing massive flaws in mtgo is a bit of making things more appealing over well fixing some issues
All that said I'd love to seriously play with something like rules lawyer lol. Though I'd imagine that would still be banned.
unstable's only popularity is driven by the fact probably that a large majority of players today werent around for unhinged/unglued. I wasnt around as long as some others, but as a new player who had limited spending money I had the option of either buying standard legal sets (onslaught-mirrodin block) or unhinged which had 0 playable cards in it so i made the very easy choice of buying mirrodin block packs. It is easy to see why unhinged failed so badly and why unstable will too, for any player getting in to the game their money is better spent elsewhere because its either you spend money on real cards or 100% unplayable garbage.
Even if you told newb me back then that the unhinged lands would be fetching 5-10 dollars each 10 years later I would still probably still go for the packs with playable cards regardless.
Well, that is my anecdotal experience and opinion on un-sets in general.
I'd say it's worse now with the internet. A major part of the Un- charm is just the hilarity of the cards. However with the internet where I can look up the entire set with a five minute search and have to spend $0, and the fact that a joke is only funny so many times why would I bother spending money on the packs except for some pretty lands which will probably be a little over produced, cherry picked and sold off for $1 or less each in a month?
The only way to make Un- sets a good seller is he cards are easily playable while still being bullshit jokes that would ruin a competitive game but be awesome with casual with friends.
There is no way to make un-sets good sellers at a regular $3.99 price tag. Period.
I mean, one of my favorite memories of Unhinged was our local judge yelling Toy Boat at me everyturn without fail, causing me to be legit intimidated by him. Its nostalgia for me.
Outside of that and Art lands, that is.
This is exactly it. The cards hold no value. The full art lands are cool but they don't get anywhere close to making it worth it. I wonder if it would work if they made the boxes way way cheaper how cheap I don't know. Or could they add something to the boxes that are playable to entice people to buy the set.
I really want to pick up a box because I am a sucker for the full art lands and the set looks fun but fuck it is just too expensive for what I get.
Just buy land lots and don’t support them.
Well unstable just got url=https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/unstable-variants-2017-12-06]zanier[/url]
13 cards have multiple version of them. Some are just different art/flavor text but several are completely different effects, cost and/or p/t.
With all they are putting into these should just make them legal in something like commander permanently. Hell make the less crazy stuff just regular constructed legal. Like some of it is different but not too different than crazy one of mechanics we got in time spiral. Give me Rules Lawyer gdi!
My suggestion is to wait until it has been out a drafted for a month-ish. I don't like the lands, personally, so I haven't looked up site prices.
at that price it puts a booster box at 72$ minimum, im sure better deals will become available when the hype dies. I think it is highly likely we'll see unstable at 70 or lower, just like during this years black friday deals there were 67-70$ standard boxes on sale.
On a side note, ive seen some boxes opened on youtube and there have been some without a foil basic land in it. For those who don't know, unhinged boxes pretty much always came with 1-2 foil basics but I think the ratio is lower because of all the variant cards in unstable. So i expect foil basics to be higher initially this time around.
Imperial Recruiter and Chalice of the Void both in the A25 set, at Mythic Rare no less.
Thalia and Gisela too, glad I just sold those awhile back since price will tank
Upshifting Chalice is going to do nothing, after 1 month. Putting Gisela and Akroma in as Mythics is fucking pathetic and ignorant. Imperial Recruiter has been in like 1 deck since Top got banned. At least, put it at rare.
Wizards continues to make consistently poor decisions, and they wonder why their player-base is historically down.
"Let's all buy $10 packs at a chance for a $0.75 Akroma or Gisela Mythic!"
-No one
nah they already have their bases covered when they unbanned jace, so they managed to prop up the set's value. My guess is that they were scared by iconic masters' perceived flop and decided to change something last minute.
Iconic Masters flopped hard. This set is going to, as well, unless it has original art, friendly fetches. Most people already have Jace.
