idk about skilling after fatigue but if you're trying to find a way to skillup, don't neglect the hot and cold game. having dug w/ gyshal greens maybe 5 times in my career up to that point, but doing hot and cold off and on for a while i discovered i'd managed to shoot up to either A45 or A40 (i forget which) off the hot and cold trips alone. it's not gonna ding you A10 overnight, but it's a nice boost.
I was under the impression that you need to pull up an item to get skillup, but I could be wrong about that.
Considering I would get next level faster by digging items in saruta than spamming /dig until I got some logs in the jungles, I'm almost certain you need to dig something.
otherwiki has confirmations about people levelling when digging up nothing, maybe its just slower skill than digging an item
I went rank 4->5 while fatigued, was rank 4 while fatigued, used up my last 3 stacks and dinged rank 5.
I assume you can skill up on failed digs, but its a helluva lot slower. I must've just been like .1 away from rank 5.
is it really worth raising your own chocobo for digging? say, for me who doesnt know the first thing about raising one?
Absolutely, to get a basic digging chocobo for yourself is pretty simple and there's a massive difference in results. Digging chocobos do not desperately need maxed out stats like racing birds, only thing that matters is that you teach it burrow/bore/treasure finder (any two of those three depending on your preferred digging areas and if you are devoted to Hot and Cold or not). Just get an egg, go to your home town's stables and start raising. Keep it on any care plans that improve intelligence/receptivity so it'll learn stories asap as you get them. Spam the appropriate walks to meet up with the Bastokan Galka and Windurstian Taru NPCs to obtain the stories to teach the job traits (the walks you need to do depend on the stable you're raising the bird at). As soon as it has the job traits you wanted put it on care plans that boost endurance to up the riding time a bit (self-raised bird's riding time at lowest endurance is around 17mins and chocobo riding gear will not increase this).
Because of the shorter riding time I don't know if you want to use self-raised bird at lower digging ranks where you spend a lot of time waiting at zones/between digs. Having said that, if you dig to fatigue every day you should had ranked up couple of times anyway by the time you have raised a full-fledged bird from an egg if you start today. Self-raised chocobo with burrow and/or bore has a far wider treasure pool to dig from than a rental bird immediately pumping up your odds of digging up items and getting skill ups. Check otherwiki for the lists of items from each zone to figure out for yourself because no two diggers are the same.
And if you are only interested in one ability, gain it by breeding, then you can raise your Chocobo with max Str and End.
Or if you want two abilities and one is the Treasure Finder one. Gain the other by breeding, raise Chocobo to max Str and End, you should then have still enough time to get Dis high enough for Treasure Finder and your Chocobo to end up like a rental with benefits.
Make also sure to look at what those abilities do pull up, in some zones the normal items are far more interesting and you shouldn't use a bird with bore or burrow there.
