has anyone ever done Burning Man?

I'm thinking of going this year but I wanted to see what people who have gone have thought of it. I realize it's not for a while but I have plans coming up soon that I'd have to cancel in order to have enough time off to make it. it seems pretty fucking cool though. I've gone to a couple different big music festivals and I've always liked the camping and the community more than the shows themselves, so living for a week in Black Rock City sounds fantastic.

Don't drive your own car there.

It's fine. I drove a Lincoln Towncar out there and it was fun.

The black rock desert is a giant dry lake bed with no trees or rocks or anything. The entire area is covered in fine white alkali dust. It also gets windy out there.

It is an amazing area to go camping in during the off season when there are less people. I have never personally been to burning man but if you plan on going I would recommend going out there and camping with a couple friends before hand so you get a feel for the area.

Adam Lambert: I'm 'proud of my sexuality' - CNN.com

Article relevant to your interests. Seems that Adam Lambert decided to try out for American Idol while tripping on mushrooms at Burning Man.

Edit: Forget about the article title the majority of the article is about him coming out. Which I guess may be relevant to you too.

haha that article is what inspired me to go. I have another music festival I've got plans to go to but I'm not really hyped for it this year so I wanted to find some other big event for the summer. I read that line about him tripping on mushrooms and I thought "hmm, interesting..."

of course I've heard of Burning Man before, but it's like a light just popped on in my head when I read that line.

wow, I didn't realize it was quite that isolated. it's not like the camping I've done where everyone is clustered together. I can see now why they say you need a bike.

Pro-tip: Don't do shrooms there. Burning Man is trippy as it is, but at night, and on shrooms... It was definitely an experience to remember, good and bad.

judging by the pictures, it looks like there's a center-town like hub thing in the middle with everything else expanding outwards.

Also yes, it does look very dusty and people are wearing face masks in multiple pictures.

It is quite isolated and very dusty and like I said earlier the wind can pick up and create dust storms. And don't try to hide in tents or cars the dust goes everywhere. It is a really cool place though.

I went back in 2005. Every year is different but from what I hear it's always seeing more and more people. Most of the pictures are in the centre area near the Man where people set up Art installations and no camping permitted.

You will be camping with 40,000 people. It's set up like a giant horse shoe, if that makes any sense. Think of the horse shoe being the all the tents and camps set up. With the big vacant area being where all those pictures are taken.

If you do go up there you have to be prepared as SELLING THINGS AT BURNING MAN IS NOT ALLOWED. The main organizers set up a place to buy ice as its too hard for individual people to all haul up their own ice. They also sell coffee lol.

Basically you have to bring your own food and water (however in a pinch you can buy ice bricks and let them melt). Bring a mask as the playa dust will get in everything, most especially your nose. You will learn to hate playa boogers. Any tent you bring must have very good anchors as the wind on the playa is very strong.

Its alot of fun and the art and shows you can see up there are awesome. You will meet some cool people and a lot of crazy people. Check the Burning man website here: The Burning Man Project :: Welcome Home

They have a guide here: Burning Man: First Timer's Guide

thanks, that is exactly the kind of information I needed. it sounds like it can be a bit rough at times (possible understatement) but is definitely worth the trip.

    hahaha yeahhhh no.

I do plan to find an older psychic lady to sleep with and then be reborn while my older brother tries to keep everyone from lighting the burning man on fire because he doesn't want to go back to civilization, though.

    yessss someone got the reference.

and, I'm 95% sure I'm going now. I just have to buy my ticket from a friend who can't go anymore. it's funny, I was totally excited when I decided to go, but now that it's becoming a reality, I'm starting to get scared shitless of what I'm getting myself into. but that's a good sign, I think. anyone who hasn't been to Burning Man yet and isn't a little nervous their first time is not fully anticipating the full experience, from what I hear.

oh man. this is going to be fucked up.

Have fun just don't litter in the desert that pisses me the fuck off. Burning Man itself isn't as bad anymore because they threatened the organizers to cancel it forever if they left any trash from the actual event but the attendees who go out before or stay after fuck up the desert so much and I really hate it.

Also don't act like a jackass or drive like crap through Reno area. That is another thing that sucks about Burning Man the city gets clogged with people acting like assholes because they are already in "Burning Man" mode.

    Other than that have fun.
