I am not over-intellectualizing anything, Beckwin. "Must-Have" is an odd term to begin with, nothing wrong with wanting someone to make the distinction from "good game."

And that pedestal is going to appear under me with or without my intention. It is the result of having to deal with appeals to authority and popular opinion. So I might look cocky when I reject shit like "Hey, IGN says this is a good game!" but I don't give a damn really, IGN is wrong and I will likely explain why.

But getting back to where the topic is currently at: saying it means "essential" is fair, but essential to whom? And since when has essential meant "most popular/overhyped/nostalgic?"

Games that set trends would be essential to ONLY critics anyway, to give them context for reviewing future games. Anyone else could do without it.

And to throw out one last bit: if we are listing essential games, it would need to be by genre. The best version of Madden might seem essential to someone, but certainly not the guy who restricts his tastes to Japanese Strategy games.

It seems I need to explain the whole situation, because there is some confusion here. Most confusion could be cleared just rereading my posts in that thread, but really, that is not realistic.

I was never making the argument that Flower wasn't a game and that certainly wasn't my intent. Actually, you can quote me saying sentences that sound exactly like "Flower is a videogame." What I was saying is that Flower is barely a game. It is barely anything. It is flashy pretty superficial nothing with almost no substance.

I don't care if people like Flower. In fact, if people just continued to post saying "Download Flower! It is good!" I wouldn't have made another post. You see, someone went and said "Don't listen to BRP..."(PERSONAL ATTACK) immediately after I had posted. That is a challenge and that is where the debate began. The doofus eventually gave up(without ever explaining why Flower is a good videogame), but it continued thanks to a rotation of other dudes(and quickly became "BRP is not right! Because I have sources and Wikipedia!)

And again: I don't care if people like Flower. I was only defending my stance that it is not a good game. Apparently I was too good and too ruthless at this, because I have yet to find another reason why I was banned. Let us hope I can find that out, eventually.

Finally, you are right, I shouldn't have to care about what makes a game. Normally. However people like to say silly things and then they ask me questions while doing so, leaving me to explain.

People saying "Flower is a shitty game... but... PRETTY WORDS, ART, EMOTIONS." I would respond "Flower is a shitty game." Apparently there was a disconnect because they would then say "BUT! PRETTY WORDS, ART, EMOTIONS... let me quote reviews that could be about taking a shit for all we know."

So maybe they were right in a sense. Yes, Flower is a simple, boring videogame and that is basically all they could say. It is a videogame. It is simple. Nothing more. No pretensions.

And concerning pseudo-intellectualism... same deal(since both traits are linked tightly together.) I would like to see examples of me throwing around fancy concepts and fancy words to hide points, because it would come as a big surprise.

why was I banned, dear mods? Was there a rule I broke? Will there be a rule added? Looking over the message(left behind by Epical?) doesn't really clue me in at all, well cept that infractions apparently don't exist for me:

Dude, you of all people should know better than to do that (PS3 games thread). You're not even worth warning/infractioning anymore. Do it again and we'll keep increasing ban time. Consider these infractions in 24-hour increments.

Odd, Epical(or whomever) makes it seems I get warnings all the time. I haven't gotten one in over 3 years, but again, I will leave the him or others to explain. Or maybe they won't explain at all. I will continue not breaking the rules either way.

It was a fucking retarded ban, of course he has no justification for it other than perhaps thinking a debate is "trolling" (is trolling a bannable offence? I suppose it doesn't matter when they love to just add new rules and ban prior offenders anyway). I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for when you know damn well the only one you'll get will be as retarded as the ban itself.

Well, it is amusing watching clumsy moderation(and administration - just look at Advanced.) If I have to deal with it, I should at least get a laugh at it. Right now I have to guess why it is funny.

My main criteria for something being good or not is whether I enjoy it on its own merits. If it's so bad, that I find it enjoyable it's not good, but if I enjoy it for other reasons, even if it is flawed, I'm going to call it good in my books. It being an enjoyable experience on its own merits is the most important thing. Enjoyable as a trainwreck is a different thing.

Well I know what you said. It just sounds... obvious? I mean everyone is doing that. Maybe the only difference is that I am being much more specific in criticism. Well I wasn't in the PS3 thread, at least not in my first post(where I actually talked about PS3 must-haves and not PS3 must-not-haves.)

EDIT: Also it is pretty bad when people who start(and equally assist in the continuation of) a big argument see it as a relief when their opponent gets banned. Wasn't even a derail.


EDIT: And you know even if it was a derail good mods would just split the thread. You won't find those on BG.
