    Vector Marketing. What?

Is this company as big a pyramid scheme as I think it is?

For anyone that hasn't heard of them, here's a brief (hopefully) synopsis of what happened to me:
Mail comes. I open the letter from them. Letter reads "Dude if you want a sweet ass, 16.95/hr job, you should come apply."
I drive to their shady two room office suite.
    Lame presentation ensues.
    Them: No, it's not telemarketing.
    Me: Ok, cool.
Them: However, after you sell stuff, feel free to call the client back and hound them for their friends/loved ones phones numbers.
    Me: Wait what.
Them: Also we need $150 from you.
    Me: no lol, bye.

tl;dr: Has anyone had experience with this company? Because it seems shady as fuck to me.
(Also this post sort of puts them in a bad light, but I don't care. Search Vector Marketing on wikipedia, and it should tell you about their operation.)

I considered it, then realized for the bullshit presentation I had to do/time spend driving around/money spend on gas/setting appointment with people, minimum wage job seem like a stabler income unless you have a bunch of suckers/sympathetic friend/family members/psychotic serial killer/master chef as your customers

Actually not that shady, its just a traveling salesman thing. They just make you buy a demo kit, when you quit, you get your money back iirc. Shit job though, door to door sales sucks.

I've seen Cutco on Modern Marvels and have also had friends work with Vector (the firm selling stuff for them.) It's legit, but it's just a tough sale to make

Cutco? I remember being tempted by this when i was a broke freshman in college. way it seemed to me was it was overpriced and they basically just got as many people as possible and encouraged you to go to family/friends to sell to.
which is ok i guess if you don't feel bad selling garbage for too much to the people that are closest to you, since they probly won't have the heart to tell you no.

The "Go forth and sell knives to your friends and loved ones" part got me the most.

I hate companies like this. I hate the language they use, I hate their approach to clients, I hate how they use employees, I hate whatever the hell they sell.

Most people quit after they try for a month, but in that time, they will probably have sold at least 1 thing from the catalog

It just seems like a bad idea to me, would rather get a real job. Not at all comfortable with asking my friends/family to buy shit from me.

Check out Amway for "legit" sales stuff.

    Everybody loves residual income.

just go find a upscale clothing store if you want a sales job. you can get commission and at least you will walk away from that one with enough fine clothing to last you a while.

That doesn't sound legit at all. Also, the quotation marks, etc.

EDIT: Also I'm not interested in sales exclusively. Anything to help pay for cigarettes/tuition/PS3 in that order.

or at the minimum they purchased the " sales kit" ...

I swear, the next person to approach me with another MLM, Network Marketing, Pyramid Scheme type of a shit.... and they always come at you with an angle, like "Hey, are you open to expanding your income opportunities?" or "Are you tired of making less then your boss?" And you are like oh wow, whats this all about. BULLSHIT. Don't ever fall for it.

I actually had the displeasure of being suckered by a brainwashed friend to attend one of the meetings/cult gatherings. Forget the MLM company, but it was selling dail-up or something. People something I think.

Place was huge, 100+ members attending. Everyone spoke the same way too. "Looking sharp!" Every-fucking-one. The dudes talking about buying brand new BMWs all looked alien in their cheap suits, too. But hey, i'm sure they'd buy their nice suits real soon, it's all a numbers game, right? "NUMBERS GAME".

The highlight of the night were two asian dudes "co-founders" talking about money, and how everyone loves money. They took some serious liberty with logic and common sense too. Went like this, 1. Sign up, 2. Pay $300 for kit, 3.??? 4. profit. The audience applause.

    Fucker went on for 2 hours... I had to sit there, for 2, effing hours. But it got worse, oh so much worse. I'll quote;

Asian inspirational speaker: "You know how they say, "Money is the root of all evil"? Well, if you don't like money, give it to me! I like money" ... *roaring applause*.. And that did it. I had to leave or somebody would die. When everyone got up for a 15min break, I ran out and drove fast.. crying on the way.

One thing I forget to mention in my rant is, to them, it actually is a numbers game. But they won't tell you what that actually means. It means that they sucker more and more "employees" to pay for the goddamn kits, bust their ass, max out credit cards to continue pushing a product that would never sell otherwise, and for every 100 employees, for every maxed out credit card, for every crushed self-esteem, for every lied too naive kid, some fucker on top gets paid.

If you get a real sales job, you'll end up having your friends and family buy from you anyway.

I was at one of these before, selling vitamins or some crap, left before I put anything up (except traveling 1.5 hours to the training). If you have a bunch of people you can get under you that will bust their ass, thats when these work the best, not actually selling the crap.

I know a group of guys who were driving nice cars (80k+) for a few years selling telephone services, didn't last long though.

    And ya, Amway...lol.
