Battlefield 3 preview: Getting our PC multiplayer on with some classy changes
Imagine you're invited over to friend's place to watch Willy Wonka i.e. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You know Willy Wonka, you really enjoy it and you're totally ready to sing along to "Pure Imagination" (in your head) with Gene Wilder for the umpteenth time. But, when you show up, it's the Johnny Depp version. It's still great, but you don't really know it as well. That was my Battlefield 3 E3 preview experience.

Gorgeous. Battlefield 3 on PC with the Frostbite 2 engine is a stunner (as you can see here). How will it look on consoles? Good question, since DICE still isn't showing the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions. After playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on consoles for nearly a year straight, I was ready to compare and contrast BF3 to the latest installments in the series, but that will have to wait for another time.

What I did get to do was run through a game of Rush and check out some of the class changes. What I played was the "Operation Metro" multiplayer map in Rush mode, which requires the attacking team to blow up a set of objectives to move on to next area. The full map is split into four areas. The environments offered a variety of situations in each section, as Operation Metro starts in an urban park with plenty of space to maneuver, the next two areas are the cramped confines of the subway system. The final section has the attackers scrambling to set off charges on two boxes in front of Paris Stock Exchange. The action gets intense as the attackers try to push and heal, inching every forward, while the defenders shoot from the comfort of the building across the street.

The classes have been switched around a little bit, changes that will be welcomed by many Battlefield: Bad Company 2 veterans. The Assault class is now the healer and can deploy health packs and paddle shock fallen comrades back into the fight. The Engineer maintains his role as the "vehicle healer." The Support class now deploys ammo and can mount its heavy machine gun, which allows the player to "suppress" the enemy from long range, causing them to "lose awareness of the battlefield." Finally, the Recon (SNIPER!) can't just blind fire with intense accuracy anymore. Developer DICE has reduced quick scoping and the sniper needs to hold his breath for a super accurate shot -- yes, this makes everyone else who doesn't regularly play a sniper very happy.

The classes were also locked in the preview, so I couldn't check out any of the loadout options.

Overall, the gameplay felt like Battlefield, a particularly good thing in case you were worried about the series going down the Call of Duty route of focusing on the lone wolf player -- especially since Battlefield 3 is adding team deathmatch. Of course, it's hard to judge any Battlefield experience without playing the game with a squad you know, a core tenet of an enjoyable Battlefield multiplayer experience.

Also mentioned, but not shown, was the customizable dog tags. You'll still earn dog tags for melee kills, but now your victim's dog tags will include customized imagery and stats.

It's good to see Battlefield 3 shaping up and looking so hot on PC, but it's time we started getting an idea of the console experience.

Some more multiplayer impressions from http://bf3blog.com/2011/06/battlefie...3-impressions/

After a long wait, we finally had some time with the multiplayer part of Battlefield 3 earlier today. The map showcased was Operation Metro, which was set in Paris and offered urban combat and some tense action in a subway. We tried out most of the classes and tried as many things as possible. Here are our first impressions of the game:

*The game looks fantastic. Runs smooth, the lighting and details, the shadows are spectacular, whether indoor or outside. *We dunno what hardware it was running on, but BF3 is absolutely gorgeous.
*After you die, a screen pops up that shows the custom dog tag and rank of the enemy that killed you — great little detail.
    *Teams were USMC and Russians.
*Prone is back, it feels like it takes a second or so to go prone. Not too fast, not too slow, just right.
*The map offered a lot of variety: you can enter lots of buildings, go up to the second floor, camp etc. We already saw a few campers who loved the new buildings.
*Destruction is extensive and a lot more detailed. Even shooting a wall looks amazing in BF3.
*Weapons feel and sound like Bad Company 2 (on first impression), meaning they feel and sound fantastic.
*Player animations are far better than Bad Company 2 and other Battlefield games. Very fluid and lifelike, almost as if you are watching someone run in real life.
*The scoreboard looks a lot simpler than in Bad Company 2. We dunno if it was finalized or just alpha.
*We had a few awards pop up during the game (ribbons) which looked a lot like those in BF2.
*No commo rose. It wasn’t bound to the “Q” button. We looked, couldn’t find it anywhere.
*You can op-out of being revived.
*There is a health bar, but regenerative health is back.
*You can select fire mode (e.g. single shot, full auto etc.)
*4 players per squad, squad leader is indicated by a star. Squads work pretty much like in Bad Company 2, and you still get squad point bonuses.
*In support, you can use an M4 with a flashlight.
*You can mount LMGs on the ground and on most surfaces, but the gun can only pan approximately 90 degrees to left and right, which feels realistic.

Overall, we were impressed by what we saw. The game felt very solid and polished, despite being in “alpha” stage. We’ll upload some photos of the Battlefield 3 booth later today when we get back to the hotel, and we’ll try to get some interviews with DICE tomorrow.
Awwww there goes the team kill/revive spam trolling and dolphin diving. I do like the assault and support class changes though.

Sent from my private bathroom stall.

    :edit:

    Some more class info

    http://bf3blog.com/2011/06/battlefield-3-classes-revealed/

We’re just getting started with E3, and Battlefield 3 is one of the main events here — and of course, the main reason we’re here. We got some new Battlefield 3 information, this time, concerning the multiplayer classes. For Battlefield 3, the 4 classes have received somewhat of an overhaul. Here’s the breakdown of the new classes in Battlefield 3:

    Assault/Medic
The Assault and Medic a classes have been combined now, where the Assault class can either chose to heal/revive teammates, or you can opt for a grenade launcher instead of the revive kit, if you want more firepower.

    Support
The Support class is now the one handing out ammunition, and can also provide covering fire. You can mount your LMG and if fire in the direction of the enemy, you’ll get special bonus points for providing covering fire for your teammates. You can also select an assault rifle with a flashlight for the dark parts of maps (like tunnels), instead of the LMG.

    Engineer
The Engineer retains much of his role and load-out from Bad Company 2, you’re equipped with rocket launchers against enemy armor, and a repair tool to fix friendly vehicles, and a sub machine gun.

    Sniper
The Sniper has the same role as in previous Battlefield games, and is armed with a sniper rifle, C4 explosives, and spotting gear.

    Hahah... owned

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick wanted to play Battlefield 3 at E3 2011 yesterday. Only one problem: he had to get past EA.

A senior informant has told CVG of how they witnessed Kotick's PA discuss Bobby's chances of a hands-on trial of the military FPS with EA reps on the door of the publisher's non-public presentation.

Our deepthroat tells us that the female assistant hopped to the front of the EA queue on Wednesday morning (08/06/11). The DICE-developed military title is only being shown behind closed doors in Los Angeles - and not on console.

Her request was reportedly stewed over for a minute in private, until an EA rep re-emerged on the public show floor. He then explained that senior management had been consulted about the Activision chief's request, but that "it would not be possible".

Kotick's company is showing off BF3 competitor Modern Warfare 3 at E3 - a presentation which is also invite-only.

We're told by our witness that Kotick's PA put up a small conversational fight before walking away. She did not look in a good mood. Our observer asked an EA rep on the door for clarification of what he thought he'd seen immediately afterwards, and the events were corroborated.

    Seriously, though. Beyond amazing.

EA's Battlefield 3 will be released on 360, PS3 and PC on October 25 in the US and three days later in Europe.

Activision's Modern Warfare 3 will hit the same formats on November 8 worldwide.

Update: Activision is denying that such a series of events ever took place. Dan Amrich wrote on Twitter, "Okay, checked here, and as I thought, the whole 'Bobby denied' thing is not true. Did not happen. Someone is pulling your leg, folks."
    Sounds like some

“Modern Warfare 3″ vs “Battlefield 3″ fight turns ugly

The showdown between next fall’s biggest first-person shooters escalated at E3 this week, with EA’s and Activision Blizzard’s top brass exchanging some vitriol. Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard’s CEO first went on CNBC on Monday claiming that EA’s “Battlefield 3″ was just a PC title with only a ”small audience.” In response, EA’s CEO, John Riccitiello, told Reuters that Kotick was spreading misinformation about “Battlefield 3″ and that contrary to what Kotick said, it would be widely available on consoles.
Here’s what both CEOs told me:

    BOBBY KOTICK, CEO, ACTIVISION BLIZZARD
“We just want to stay true to the interest of the Call of Duty fans and we try to not get distracted by what people are doing. I can’t objectively tell you what I think of other products until I see them. Battlefield I’ve only seen on a PC and nobody’s seen it on a console yet. Most of our consumers play games on a console. Until I see it on a console, I wouldn’t be objective on commenting on it.”

    JOHN RICCITIELLO, CEO ELECTRONIC ARTS
“It’s the beginning of the war and (Kotick) recognizes they’re going to be threatened. We’re going to have a clash of the titans this fall. The very fact that he’s trying to cast doubt on our game is a perfect example of how we got his goat. In terms of where this goes, we think our PS3 game is better than their Xbox game and our PC game is better than their PC game. If that’s all he’s got to say, it’s obviously going to evaporate as we launch all three. If you went to our press conference, you saw the PS3 footage and the Xbox footage. If Bobby thinks that is PC footage, he’s in real trouble.”
