I would argue that if you're able to purchase endgame gear, that you would have noobs with awesome gear. But from playing FFXI from release, it doesn't matter at all. Noobs always get the best gear, regardless if they can MT it or not.

Some would argue that the 'workload' is an achievement and skipping the achievement to get the gear devalues it.

Skipping the pay "devalues" the job? Well certainly.

You are still describing these games as jobs. You are ignoring the essence of games. More importance seems to be placed on this "boring work to Xbox Achievements" conversion. If RMT has done any damage in a game like FFXI, it wasn't because idiots/casuals/etc are now wearing expensive gear.

This is an issue that goes beyond money shops and their criticism. It is a huge misconception spread across over most MMO players. Like only the best players must have the best gear despite it being clearly understood they are not the best because of their gear.

Should the game demand you to use a money shop, then perhaps the game might be too expensive(depending on how much you have to pay vs monthly fee I guess.) Some silly reasoning like jealousy of rich and "lazy" people needn't be brought up. More common is that the game is extremely boring without the use of the money shop... which makes me think the game isn't worth playing at all because it will always be boring no matter how much money you spend.

You know you can already do that in City of Heroes / City of Villains ... which was made by Cryptic Studios ... who is also making Champions Online.

Of course the reason for that is Jack Emmert, the founder / head of Cryptic and creator of CoH/CoV sold CoH to NCSoft and all the employees went with the game. Only Jack stayed behind to begin work on Champions to compete against the product he created.

CoH is already amping up competition by releasing its second expansion "Going Rogue", to blur the line between hero and villain.

I didn't have a PC that could run that game when it came out, even though I wanted so badly to play it. I really don't like to start playing MMOs nearly 5years after they are released. It's so much more fun to be a noob with a whole server full of noobs, than being the only one.

Hm, good points I guess I should be clear then. I am not suggesting my opinion is fact, but for me I feel a sense of accomplishment after I complete an event and am rewarded with items to show I accomplished the feat. If I know someone else could get an equivalent reward by simply buying it and bypass the event, I think that's cheesy. It turns the trophy from your achievement into a simple reward, because it's no longer unique or as valuable anymore. It'd be like if everybody could buy Ridills in FFXI, the people who got them legit would probably be a little upset. You can argue they are upset for the wrong reasons sure, but it doesn't change the fact that it does lower the value associated with it and leaves a sour taste in the mouth of the player.

You are making a leap that doesn't quite add up.

So you say these rewards develop a value because of the hard work you spent. Then you say they lose this value because someone can get it without that hard work? But there is no connection.

All the hard work was still performed. Consider why this is all worthwhile in the first place. The "hard work." Really this is called playing. Trophies and xbox achievements and whatever else are simply results of playing, it is not the other way around even if games like MMORPGs try to make it that way. So if someone pays for their trophies without playing the game, then they only lose out.

You can actually buy hockey/soccer/basketball/etc trophies. There are stores for it. Does this make getting a trophy in a little leagues game any less worthwhile?

    Win.

Still, if you can't get the items in game with out actually paying for them, that's fail.

Great analogy, but I suppose in the case of an in-game item, when you can easily regulate who has access to what, it is a little less appropriate. It's not so much the item itself but the rarity associated with it then, since it requires accomplishing something beforehand, that is valuable in my view. I find myself trying to create an example but in all cases the idea of 'earning' the item comes back. Maybe I do view it as a work you perform to get the item, but that doesn't necessarily need to be a bad thing. Sometimes it feels good to put in the time to get something rather than being handed it, I don't know. Maybe it's a selfish side of me that wants everybody else to do it the way I did it as opposed to skipping ahead.

There's always going to be people who get items that don't work for them, no matter what.

I've killed Fafhogg more times than I'd like to count, yet I never got a ridill or ebody for whatever reasons. Yet someone else can create a new HNMls go claim one nidhogg and one fafnir and get both those drops 1/1, with next to no workload. Then disband the LS the next week.

It all comes down to, do you enjoy playing the game and working hard for your items? Or would you rather get them the easy way? If you feel accomplished after getting something, that's what matters. Shouldn't be playing to have the biggest epeen, that's just a waste of time.

BTW I think this thread is WAY off course! I was hoping to see a lot of people interested in it and maybe make a BG guild where we could play together, instead the thread turned into this Guess I'll be playing alone it seems..

I have a beta account thanks to groovebox, but they haven't announced the next play period. I'll probably try it out when that time comes around if I don't waste all the time making my hero. XD

I tried to get into the beta and no luck, was really bummed. The next beta is August 17th I believe. I should be in that one due to preordering! We need to get on the same server that weekend ^^

Well fileplanet is starting to give away open beta keys for subscribers only...and I keep trying to get a code for crimecraft and hulxey from them too but keep getting "Invalid Code" thing on it when it should show the code.

edit: it better open to all users on it

Played a bit, just enough to get to Travel Powers. The game is pretty relaxed and well done actually, but I hate the fact that I can't zoom out very far and that will keep me from playing, surprisingly enough. However, I did enjoy giving into the child inside me and making a DBZ character. I was going to make a Naruto and Bleach one too but making the DBZ one was difficult enough. The travel powers are what inspire the characters, imo. For Bleach I'd take up Teleportation to mimmick Shunpo, and for Naruto I'd take Acrobatics because they move almost exactly like ninjas during acrobatics.

But yeah, it's fun but not worth playing imo. I like the idea of playing my own character but not enough to dedicate it to a decent MMO with nothing all that special about it. I wsa surprised to find nearly everybody had come up with a fairly uunique hero though, did not run across very many gimmicks like my own. I did find one funny character named "The Charming Prince" and he looked like the incredible hulk (huge green body, purple pants, etc.) but he was a Frog and had flipper feet and a frog face. haha

Screenshots of SSJ 'Maguspk' incoming... haha

    Bump.

    If you have not gotten a beta key and want to get in on the open beta which goes live some time today;

    Get a key here:

    Concours Champions Online

The answer is "L'univers des supers héros."

Enter in your key on your Champions Online profile then go here:

Open Beta Instructions - Champions Online Forums
Saw it on /v/, better go do it if you want in while you can.
