    FFXI on USB HD

I'm going to be staying with some friends and don't have a laptop so I was wondering if I could use my 320GB HD to play off of one of their computers. I've seen threads talking about mojopac but I can't find a vista compatible one. I've also seen ppl talk about doing things with the registry but i don't fully understand how it works...

Here's something I found on one site. If this is how it's done, could someone try to explain it a little better for me. It talks about .bat files and things not quite sure about. Also, I've been told not to copy game files b/c you will lose some files in the copy. Is this true?

Anyway, here's the post that explains how to copy. If someone could explain it better or tell me if it's a load of crap. Really want to play FFXI for the month I'll be gone from my PC.

    Spoiler: show
    Prepare:
    1. Start->Run, type "regedit"
    2. Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnlineUS
    3. Right click the folder and select "Export"

    Move:
    4. Copy all files to new PC/external drive
    5. copy the registration file you exported

    Install:
    6. open the exported registration file with the texteditor of you choice (notepad will do) and edit all drive-letters to match your external harddisks driveletter. After that save the changes.
    7. run the changed registration file to import the registration data
    8. create a .bat file, and put it in PlayOnline\SquareEnix\

    content of .bat file:

    regsvr32 /s "FINAL FANTASY XI\FFXi.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "FINAL FANTASY XI\FFXiMain.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "FINAL FANTASY XI\FFXiResource.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "FINAL FANTASY XI\FFXiVersions.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\polhook.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\unicows.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\patchfiles\PlayOnlineViewer\view er\com\app.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\patchfiles\PlayOnlineViewer\view e\com\polcore.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\polcfg\sysinfo.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\util\unicows.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\ax\MSVCR71.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\ax\polmvf.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\ax\polmvfINT.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\com\app.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\com\polcore.dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\contents\PolContents. dll"
    regsvr32 /s "PlayOnlineViewer\viewer\contents\polcontentsINT.d ll"
    regsvr32 /s "TetraMaster\TM.dll"

    9. execute batfile. It will register all the needed .dll to run ffxi.
    10. enjoy the game

Nothing is lost in the copy, and if you export your registry entries to a REG file like posts on this forum explain, you can just open that file on another computer and start running the game. Really, all the installer does is set up registry information that says where the game is located and what settings to use for audio and video, plus actually extract the files from archives on the game discs. If you already have the files on your machine, you just need to save the registry settings in a portable format, which is what a REG file is.

Why don't you just take your desktop to your friend's house? You won't be hogging their comp for hours at a time that way.
