I went as WHM/THF for treasure hunter. I put my NPC on fierce attacker, not shield. I would engage, then unlock and move away while my NPC continued fighting.

Curing your NPC doesn't accrue enmity, so the monster should stay glued to your NPC once he or she has landed a few hits. When enmity is fairly solid you can land Slow and Para. Back when I did this, you couldn't cast Regen on your NPC. That will make this a bit easier as well.

Because the drop rate is low, your schedule may look something like this:

Day 1: Fight the floor 1 mob, wait for it to respawn, fight it again, wait, fight, etc, NPC times out.
Days 2-4: Same as day 1
Day 5: Get drop, exit without finishing tactics pearl quest.
Day 6: Climb to floor 4 with NPC and get map

Note that if you finish the tactics pearl quest, you cannot summon your NPC in promy again until you flag the quest again the following conquest tally. So be careful not to do that unless you're sure you don't mind waiting.

It's not a spell that everyone in the game needs (like Utsusemi), only BLMs, and every single person can quest it. You'd think it would be low, not worth more than a Scorpion Harness+1.

Edit: Okay, just realized that the "trade Tarut cards" quest is a prereq, that one's definitely a pain in the ass. But still, 700k.
Juno fame 6 + so many prereqs most people never even realize it exists.

You actually can solo like 99% of it, there's not a single fight in any nation that can't be trio'd easily, and I can't think of any that I don't think someone could figure out a way to duo.

The first quest is called Saga of the Skyserpent (sorry, I haven't bothered to link it for you).

To begin, talk to the taru named Fari-Wari at the teahouse in whitegate.

Edit: In order to start/continue the quests, there are certain points where the relevant general whose quest you are working on must be present in Al Zhabi. If they have been taken prisoner, you will get stuck until they are rescued.

I've been back into FFXI for about 3 months now, and have gotten DRG to 75 and THF is getting there. I have been really excited about being back again and spend a lot of my free-time at work surfing wiki and other sites for things I can do on my new character in my spare time that would make me gil or be productive in some way.

For example, I have already maxed (or near-maxed) my fame, and done most of the Teleport quests, Drain, Aspir, Warp, etc. and sold the scrolls for some good quick money. I also did the Norg ninjitsu quests and ate the scrolls.

I have also done a decent amount in (S), gotten angelstone/deathstone (sold them because I don't need my bag that big yet), campaign medals (working on these, but 5 day timer, etc.), few gobbiebags, and started crafting a bit with some of the gil I have been able to hoard from quests and BCNMs. I am also considering leveling an NPC.

Can you guys point me to some quests or the like that will be productive to my character, in gil or some other fashion? Looking for more things to do when I don't feel like leveling.

    Thanks
Welcome back, hope you are enjoying it again.

Level cooking/fishing and get your Lu Shang Rod to fish for profitable fish or you can sell the rod (though thinking of selling that rod is painful to me). You can also get the Ibisu rod and sell the Lu shang. Fishing and cooking both are extremely profitable. Cooking is even more profitable if you grow, farm your own materials.

I know people say leveling a craft is expensive. It can be but if you don't buy your skillup mats off of the auction house unless you absolutely can't get them any other way, you save a lot of gil. If you don't start to depend entirely on NPC vendor farming for gil, you should be all right for a sustainable source of income from a craft or multiple crafts.

Gardening Elemental Ores. (or level the craft and make elemental staves and grow your own ores.)

    Goldsmithing + mining
    Harvesting clothcraft materials.
Synthing Angel Skin Orbs or any of the Gobbie Bag quest items especially the last two upgrades

    Rabbit charm
    Martial Slacks
    Scroll of Escape
    Blaze Spikes Scroll
    Scroll of Phalanx
I am guessing all the new rdm en spells are good to farm if you can beat the npc vendor's price.

I personally cannot stand buying spells that are quest/drops unless I have no choice and I don't sell them because I will need them later .

Diversify your sources of income. If you jump frequently between various niche markets before they dissolve to popularity and undercutting, you can do really well.

    Good luck to you

Unlocking every job and leveling them to 37 (or better yet, 40) is very good for your character's flexibility and can be profitable as well. The conquest points don't hurt either.

Get as far as you can on every mission line (nation, zilart, cop, etc). Do every last bit of footwork until you are at a point where you must get help to proceed. This makes it a lot easier to get help or join pickup parties later. You want to avoid a situation where you see a shout for a mission you need and realize that you can't join because you have an hour of cutscenes to watch first.

Also I didn't notice this earlier, but I do that kind of shit as BLU/DNC, it's absurdly overpowered in promys, with npc on heals.

Especially once you get used to precasting head butts on the seeds for receptacles, each receptacle fight is like 2 minutes tops so you're not rushed at all.

FUN AND/OR PRODUCTIVE THINGS TO DO:

    · Level a job to 75 that will make you attractive to end-game shells. These are usually mage jobs.

    · Finish missions so that you have access to end-game areas and events; Rotz, COP and ToAU missions.

    · Get all the maps as soon as you can. People getting lost and needing help from getting from Point A to Point B is so 2004.

    · Get accessability ASAP. Visit every area of the past, so you are able to warp to them via NPC, and the crystals for the Recall spells. And get ALL five runic portals, even if they seem obscure.

    · Talk to people and make friends; network. Yes, this is a very productive thing to do, as not all the content in FFX is soloable, and this will help you get into end game shells. This isn’t just for getting help, but giving, as so much of the fun in the game is getting other people what they want.

    · Work on Assault Missions. Getting a higher rank will allow you to farm Assault Points in a more efficient manner. One can also sell items gained from Assault Points for money.

    · Work on Beastmaster. This is something you can do solo when you can’t get anything else off the ground. Also has good solo and duo applications later on .

    · As said, trying crafting, farming, HELMing and fishing. The latter requires very little initial investment and is pure profit.

    · Raise a Chocobo. This can come in handy when the Chocobo NPC is kidnapped in besieged.

    · DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Read up on every job, and get an understanding of how they work, even if you don’t play them. Read up on end-game events so you know what you’re getting yourself into, and get an idea of what you want to go after, gear-wise.

You might be surprised at how well an Attacker NPC can take out the MR even with 3 strays beating on her. Half the time she will counter one or more strays to death in the process.

Once all 3 strays are on her, I join in attacking the MR. Sometimes the NPC doesn't need a single cure.

Star Onion Brigade quests are fun.

Also, beat CoP if you haven't. That is by far the most engaging storyline in this game.

I did this one last week - been playing for almost 5 years and BLM still level 1 so I'm pretty sure I'll never need it. And yes I know I should level it to the teens for Warp, so sue me.

Me and a BST friend duo'd Agas with korrigans for the scroll, the whole thing took like 5-7 minutes and was a fun fight. My BST actually felt useful for the first time in years.

Only the wait really goes on and on.

I think you're above any suggestions I might have when it comes to 'fresh account' I'd consider post 50 and not really into 75 range, since you're already 75:

An ENM static is a nice way to make gil and occupy yourself as well, Ashu Talif BCNMs, rare to find group for these, but you will also make a hefty chunk of change off these and have a little fun, requires minimum TOAU progress, and entry cost is imperial currency, bouncing between ffxiah and wiki is a good way to find yourself some method of playing.

Salvage is great to find yourself a group for, work up your angon merits as a DRG for these and you should be welcome if a group recognizes its functional role.

If you free lot alexandrite, this can also be some very nice gil depending on the consistancy of your run, perhaps nyzul isle would be best for your budget to start however, you'll want Drakesbane as a DRG and Askar body is beneficial to your job especially for the budget allowed compared to Ares's as a new player.

As you progress expansions, many events will become obvious for you, dynamis for your wyrm helm and progress/clears(Guest for these if you can't commit to an LS, no reward of loot but you'll enter with ice access perhaps for the pick-up groups in /shout on weekends). Limbus for homam, brutal, etc.

For the truely new account under level 37, play with chocobetting too, when 100K is still a lot of money to you, taking the small odds(guarentee wins) can add up pretty fast if you're betting right, learn to read the toteboard spread, if a number has a really dominant lead on it, take only a couple tickets in that and you'll earn more then if you bet large numbers, this helps me a lot when building a small fund as I hop between servers as new chars. :/ I'm doing a trans-server project but my modem currently died on me, so no FFXI.
