Not true at all. Most cartoons these days look like they were made in Flash.

Probably because they actually are. As far as vector animation goes in North American cartoons of today, Flash Professional is the cheapest for studios at around $400 a license, where-as the cream of the crop is the Harmony Suite, running $10k a license.
(although Harmony was used a fair amount in studios for composition & colouring prior to the OMGZ TWEEN IT ALL! days)


For me, the shows I liked more, was probably the writing of the time. Todays shows are too censored for the most part, aiming at the lowest common denominator to ensure they're not going to piss off the soccer moms, where-as if I go over some of my old favourites, there are all these dark overtures or sexual innuendos you wouldn't have picked up on as a kid, not to mention the amount of cartoon violence allowed back in the days.

Warner Brothers animation didn't get where they were if it weren't for the cartoon violence, since all there was at the time was Disney and their 'family friendly' stories of cliche and crap.


Just been trying to think of a show these days that's genuinely watchable aside from the aforementioned Samurai Jack & Invader Zim. There was Undergrads which I enjoyed, but it was short lived, and wasn't aimed at a general audience to begin with, and it only had one season. ;/

kids are getting dumber and being more and more sheltered from anything that might be work (mental or otherwise) and the jokes and content seem to have followed.

not to mention thinks like buggs bunny would be too violent, and there isn't enough toilet humor to sustain any kid's attention span anyway. although i'd like to say i loved early morning cartoons, what with all of their awesome animation and classic scenes plus the music, oh the music. all that great classical music that'll probably become lost from the repertoire of the newer generations and replaced with ADD soundtracks that some guy in his basement cooked up over the course of a day with his keyboard and laptop

What are some recent American animation cartoons? The only notable one I could find of anything recent and of decent quality (though I never watched, just observing style) is Avatar.

Love to see the comparisons between the quality and style of recent Japanese vs American style.

And why are American studios not collaborating with Japanese animation studios and make some interesting Tranformers like shows. Those were voiced and written in American and animated by Toei (who also did those digimon, and Dragonball).

I downloaded and rewatched the original Transformers show a year ago. I couldn't sit through most of the episodes, they were fucking terrible. Yes I said it, the Transformers tv show is shit.

For people mentioning Warner Bros. and Bugs Bunny. As funny as they were, when they were made they were not made for children. They were cartoons made for adults as fillers in between movies at the movie theatre. Granted 80s TNT decided to throw them on tv anyways appealing to little kids, and obviously we grew up fine. Point is though, there are few cartoons (if any) that have that kind of violence/inuendos that actually was targeted towards kids.

Eh I wasn't really focusing on only children's cartoons, though i see your point. Though one thing i will say, is that the bugs bunny violence is alot less harmful than the braindead garbage kids are subjected to nowadays. At least in my eyes.

cartoons have gone to shit... Total Drama Island... it's reality TV but it's a cartoon! caught my brother watching that shit, all into it, slapped him. put on some rocko's modern life for him, problem solved.

I very much miss rocko's modern life(fortune cookie episode). But yes, there is some element of nostalgia. There does generally seem to be a more dumbing effect... bad phrase. Lots of the older cartoons had content that adults would appreciate but children wouldnt get, because it was over their heads. I see little of that now. Everything is 100% geared towards farts(farts not literally being farts in that sentence, but representing anything that someone 8 years old and under could come up with that another 8 year old would find hilarious)

After seeing the japanese version, I almost wish the animation was done in japan. The comic book styling would have really made the show shine. Maybe there could be a remake some day:

Spiderman is horrible.

I was never really a big fan of Spiderman, but at the very least, the show did the comics justice. Very low budget, but better than anything else that's been out.

The other day, I started channel surfing and came across Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. To my dismay, it still seemed like they kept showing these redundant Cartoon shows that just have no point. Everyone remembers Cartoons in the 80's and 90's. It is safe to agree that many of the cartoons during those era's were the creme of the crop when it came to childrens entertainment (hell, even adults liked a lot of those cartoons.)

My question is, what exactly has happened to the American cartoon industry? What happened to all of these great shows we use to have? I am not necessarily saying all Post-2000 cartoons are bad because of course that is not true. Shows like Teen Titans, Spongebob (Started in 1999 but lets just push it over to 2000), Justice League (Unlimited), etc were all good in their own right but the frequency of shows like these are few and far between.

I think many of us can name dozens upon dozens of fantastic cartoon shows from the 80's and 90's. Try doing the same in this era of cartoons. It may just be my view on cartoons nowadays but I seriously miss the amazing cartoon shows from the 90s. In addition to the great writing, subtle adult jokes, and more.

Dexter's, Ren and Stimpy, Spongebob etc etc inspired Adult Swim. Those [future] writers went to our new outlet, be happy it progressed that way. Hope I didn't skip 3 pages of replies and repost the same thought but these shit cartoons we can blame for the epicness of Sealab 2021, ATHF, Metalolcalypse, Tim and Eric etc etc etc

Savage Dragon was pretty badass for it's time too. Hell, any cartoon in the 90's owns the hell out of all this pseudo-anime-from-wisconsin crap companies peddle out now. Even Street Fighter had it's moments. "Bisoooooooon!!!!!"

Cartoons after school in the 90s was the best shit ever. I mean we had everything from Batman to Tailspin. Throw in some Darkwing Duck, Tiny Toons, Ducktales X-men, Spiderman on saturdays. And don't tell me you didn't know the theme songs for everyone of those cartoons.

PPL will rave bout 80's cartoons. Some were good, GI Joe always had the Moral at the end. Thundercats was pretty hot. Voltron was Voltron lol. I still loved it.

In the years since I hit 18, we had a revamp and boost to Courage. Powerpuff girls was a show with many Innuendos. Dexter. Cartoon Network really out did themselves for a time being. Flapjack is one of the better ones today.

I now present to you a couple shows that would never ever make it on TV today. Also search Disney and Nazi stuff. Things like Donald Duck and Nazi too. Today's world is all about being PC and not pissing off someone.
