My mother has worked in nursing for 35 years now, and is currently an "outcomes manager" who deals with insurance companies on a daily basis. My aunt (her sister) lives in Calgary, Alberta with her husband and 2 kids. They are both psychologists and make a lot of money - if they lived in the U.S. they could afford the best health insurance for their family available. They very much enjoy the current Canadian universal health care system.

My mom has said that if she could snap her fingers and trade the U.S. health care system for Canada's, she'd do it in a split second. Considering how much she knows about the effectiveness of the U.S. system, that's about all I need to know.

Yes I have: Canadians, English, and Swedes. Heard nothing but positive things. I've even had American friends that have studied abroad in such countries and they are shocked at how easy it was to get treatment as foreigners as well.

This is the type of stuff we NEED on TV because Joe Q Couchsitter is too lazy to pick up a newspaper. It's the only way to inform the public at large in today's culture. And something needs to be done. Healthcare costs have outpaced general inflation since George Washington got fitted for wooden teeth. A ton of middle class people are getting priced out of affording health care. The amount of bankruptcies caused by medical emergencies is staggering.


Having said that, not having a forum for opposing viewpoints is bad policy and I'm betting that if a Republican executive branch would have been given this opportunity the posters in this thread would have an opposite reaction to the one they are espousing now.

I live in a country with universal health care and to be quite honest I'd be fucking disgusted with my country if it didn't have it. Why should only the people who have the fattest pockets get the best health care? I've both worked in a NHS hospital and been a patient a few times and I have no complaints. I was always seen in a timely manner befitting of the injury I had. When I smacked my head on a halfpipe I was taken straight through to get a CT scan, when I needed an X-ray on my fingers after getting a ball spiked on them playing volley ball I hardly had to wait at all, maybe an hour at most. I'm interested to know exactly what these horror stories you've heard are.

Not really a fan of Obama, but I left home last september, towards the end of my travel insurance I broke my right thumb Muay Thai fighting. The insurance covered the surgery, but won't cover the next surgery to take out the pins. If he can get this done in the next few weeks before I get home, it would be great so I don't need to spend lord knows how much to take two pins out my hand.

On a serious note, everyone gets enough airtime to voice their opinions on TV, look at all those CNBC, Foxnews etc channels that spam the airwaves with political crap.

I'm sure if you turn one of those stations now, there are some blowhards going on about this right now. Get over it, there are no rules about airtime. He could of used one of his state of the union addresses to do it and no one would give a shit. Come up with a better excuse than "there is no opposition, because we'll get plenty of that the week after this airs.
