    Can you explain how. If I can manage to get the metal casing open would it work as long as the hd doesn't touch the sides of anything or is it more complicated. If the hd touched the side of something when spinning would the disk be warped now?

    Actually, it should be fine. A lot of externals are just HDDs in enclosures.
