Running a PC on an HDTV

So I recently got a new graphics card, and then came home for the summer and figured what the shit, why not hook up the PC to an HDTV?

Well it works, but it's a little off center and the entire screen isn't being utilized and I'm not sure how to fix it.

I'm using an Nvidia 9800 GT on a sony 40" 1080p TV via a DVI->DVI connector (i think anywho, whatever my computer monitor used).

On the left side of my screen it's not using about an inch and a half, and it's instead cutting off about the same amount on the right side of the screen. I've tried fiddling with the settings in the Nvidia little application thing to center it, but it seems to be that i can only move within the aforementioned box and it won't display outside of it.

Any suggestions or tips for how to get this to work? or if you need any other info let me know

edit: running it @ 1920x1028, the TV doesn't appear to like any of the other settings I've tried

so, basically the black is the actual screen, and the red is where (more or less) the computer seems to be displaying the screen, the top&bottom part isn't so bad it's the sides that bugs me a little

These things usually just take a lot of fiddling around in the Display settings on both the PC and HDTV to get it how you like it.

    Few things:
    What OS are you using?
Are you sure it is DVI->DVI and not DVI->VGA?
What is the resolution on the main monitor (not the HDTV) and which position do you have it set to in the Display settings?
The black bars on the sides, does the cursor appear over them?
100% sure the native resolution of the HDTV is 1920x1028?

no idea what the native resolution is, to be honest i didn't even think to check

the mouse doesn't go over the black bar on the side

    it's windows xp

the resolution i usually use on my monitor is 1440x600 (i think, can't remember it's not hooked up atm)

where might i find the native resolution of the tv? i don't happen to see it anywhere on the tv itself (sticker etc)

Usually pretty easy to find, in product descriptions/manual etc.

    Anyway, this software might help
    http://www.binaryfortress.com/displayfusion/

Has a lot of option to tweak options on the PC side. Fiddle around with it and see if you can get any improvements. I use this mostly for having different backgrounds on each monitor but either way it is a nice app to have.

I had a similar problem on my Samsung 40" TV, but using a DVI>HDMI cable. I don't use it in a dual-monitor setup, so this may/may not apply to you. First, what I did was set the resolution on the PC to be a 16x9 aspect ratio (both 1280x720 and 1920x1080 worked). Then, I set the picture size on the TV to "Just Scan", as setting it to 16x9 caused an issue very similar to yours. Your TV should probably have a similar setting for this.

It shouldn't be a problem, I am using a dual monitor set up, using DVI>HDMI cable, with my PC monitor running at a 5:4 AR resolution (CRT) and my HDTV running a 16:9 AR resolution.

What is sounds like is an overscan/underscan problem, which can come down to a number of problems like drivers, connection type etc. Have you had any progress yet through trial & error?

Sort of off-topic but do you get sound when using a DVI->HDMI cord? Never really made sense to me because the DVI port only sends video signals as far as I know.

Picture only. I have a separate cable, going from my PC to my HT sound system.

Same exact thing here, check the tv settings. Might even just be a button on the remote to switch the display orientation.

Yes its usually called pixel to pixel ratio or some sort, fixes the aspect ratio of the screen if hooked up to a PC via dvi<=>hdmi

I know that some ATI cards offer sound over DVI>HDMI. I have a 4870 and I use it with a 46'' Toshiba with picture and sound over HDMI.

You've got a 1080p tv so your native resolution should be 1920x1080.
A sony tv shouldn't have any under/overscan issues anyhow.
Nvidia drivers have a tv setup thing you can run to get it centered anyhow. Set it to 1080p in the monitor settings, shuoldnt need any scaling or centering really.
