    [Dr. BG]My dad's thigh

Hey BG, my dad is going to the doctor tomorrow for some charlie horse-esque pain in his left thigh. He said it was hurting for about 3 days. He does construction, and is about 45 years old.

I'm hoping it's not a blood clot, because if it is, I'm going to take him to the hospital right now, but none of us are doctors licensed to practice over the internet, so can you guys throw some possibilities to me? Could he have pinched a muscle? I'm worried about him.

When he was showing it to me, it looked like it was around the m. tensor fasciae latae and m. rectus femoris.

And it looked like it could be around the tractus iliotibialis, or m. biceps femoris. Either way, he's going to the doctor tomorrow. I just need to know if working tomorrow before he goes is going to cause a pulmonary embolism. It looks like Deep Vein Thrombosis. I'm clueless and scared since I'm not a licensed internet medical doctor.

Really, there aren't any doctors here. Why are you asking?

Skjie: The same reason why anybody asks these questions in GD. The internet is a mass collective of shared information, so, you know, pass such information on.

Obviously take him to the doctor, but it's probably just a charlie horse; tell him to eat some bananas. Charlie horses hurt like hell, I used to get them in my calf all the time while sleeping. Probably about the worst thing you can wake up to.

ITBS is really really painful. For me, the pain was in my knee, although the pain can be anywhere from the knee to the hip. The pain will be toward the side of the thigh obviously, where the band is. If it's toward the center, forward-facing, part of the thigh, you're looking for another diagnosis.

Yeah, but I don't think charlie horses reoccur all day.

This thread may be getting trolled slightly, but it is not a troll thread.

Also, here, I'm gonna do this for anyone thinking about it.

We must not allow a charlie horse gap.

Either a torn ligament, pinched nerve, or a pulled muscle.

It can't be a clotted artery, otherwise he'd be dead by now. The femoral artery is one of the main arteries of the circulatory system. It could be DVT, but it has to be tested (you mentioned it was in the left leg).

Just take him to the hospital. It could be much more serious than anyone here can tell you. Have him rub some IcyHot on the area above the sartorius muscle (inner thigh) but AWAY from the groin. After that, take him in and have him checked out.

Also, you mentioned he was in construction... this definitely sounds like something you want to consult a physician over. Don't waste any time, especially if the symptoms are re-curring.

Other possibilities? Heck if I sleep the wrong way I can have pain in the morning. That being said I have had periodic problems with my IT band the past couple years that have been really painful, but nothing that felt like a charlie horse I guess.

I dunno, good luck I guess.

Yeah that's what happened to me, outside of the hip, felt nasty when I would walk, especially the day after a long (for me) run, you can actually feel it sliding around. ugh.

Yeah, I want to get him to the hospital now, but he's very stubborn. I don't think he'll go today. Fuck, I hope it doesn't cause any serious trouble while he's at work. Fuckity fuck.

Take him anyway. Who gives a fuck if he's stubborn? And if refuses to go, you can't make him. All you can do is watch to see if something happens. If it does, you can always say you tried and you can't blame yourself.

Would a hospital be able to help him right now? It's 9:40 PM, I doubt the doctors that could help would be there. I mean, there's the emergency room, but they wouldn't be able to perform any tests. Agh, fuck, I opened this can of worms. ._.

A nurse can run a damn MRI on his thigh, they can help him at 3am if that's when you took him.
