    Not the best first post...

Nothing should even be said until someone carries out Kirschy's recommended study.

Fool Killer latent only works when wearing full Aurum. Mr. T designed that weapon.

Not to be mean, but it appears the OP thought the STR+8 would show up in Eq screen during a WS or something, since it would take well over a 100 WS on the same level mob with no variance in buff/debuff. (Highly improbable in meripo and ein style events.)

If you're realli up for testing STR+8 on WS I'd suggest the following test:
    WAR/THF (Record stats.)

    Perform ~20 SA'd Raging Rushes on lv 1 Bunnies/Bees outside Sandy/Bastok.
    Record each value.

Equip a "Gawain's axe" (DMG is also 90.)
Repeat the same ~20 SA's Raging Rushes on lv 1 mobs.
    Record each value.

Post /w your stats and recorded values for each WS.

Since SA forces the crit, extra TP over 100 will not alter the damage. (Which is why Raging Rush is the WS of choice for this test.) Crits while attack is capped is a very small range, and it should be easier to deduce any change in the average damage from the extra STR if it is active during WS. You should notice about ~6 damage average difference if the STR active. (Actual base stats and rounding will change this number.)

soooo, I got one of these g.axes from my ZNM LS and wanted to see what the deal is with the latent. Like the the OP, I looked around and really found nothing. Kirschy seems to give a simple example of how to test it here in this thread, and judging from all his/her other posts - definitely more then knows how to test shit in this game. So I gave it a shot.

naked 75 WAR/THF - SA > RagingRush on bees outside of Port Bastok
    base STR : 67( loltaru =/ ) - g.axe skill : 288
25 WSs with Foolkiller and 25 WSs with Gawain's Axe

I really know nothing about "FFXI math" so maybe all the people who do, can make something interesting out of these numbers. I believe that I saw somewhere else in this thread, somebody said it would be ~6dmg difference if the latent is active during WSs ... well the diffenece is smaller then that, but still a higher average on Foolkiller. So ya, I dunno - help me out!

Unfortunately I don't think thats enough to prove latent is active during WS I'm not good with the margin of error stuff, so if someone can step in and help there would be nice~ Looking at it again, if you're able to get a WS that goes above 400 it should be conclusive proof.

    DMG: 90
    fSTR cap = 18

    If no latent:
    (DMG + fSTR) + (.83 * .35*STR) * 3.15
    (90+18) + (.83 * .35*67) * 3.15
    127 * 3.15 = 400

    If latent is active:
    (90+18) + (.83 * .35*75) * 3.15
    129 * 3.15 = 406

Someone should probably double check me on 3.15 being the 2H crit pdif cap~

Well, if you're going to continue testing you should really put on more STR. Using the dSTR>12 approximation from ffwiki [(dSTR+4)/4 = fSTR2] you're right at the fSTR2 cap for your GAs. Might want to make sure it's really capped.

Kirschy, you are correct when saying 3.15 is cap for 2H weapons (same as for 1H), but not when saying :

    a) 20 SA'd WSs should be enough
    b) use another GA to compare

For a, tester need to get his weapon highest and lowest numbers on a given mob in given conditions. That is entirely luck based, during my own pDIFs caps testings, it took me nearly 1500 lolmobs kills to finally get a freaking low crit value on warp cudgel... while RelicBhuj took me only 100 bunnieslol. SneakAttack can only help to get more crit opportunities, that's it.

For b, it's useless in this topic of comparing 2 great axes on bunnies, since the conditions are capped in both situations (fSTR and pDIF). So even if STR rises by 8 for one of those GreatAxe, dSTR will still remain capped @ (14+weaponRank*2)*2, for BOTH GAs :/

Personnally i would more suggest using SteelCyclone (only WS with highest STRmod% with KJ, and easier to see with single hit) with low but fixed dSTR (ie same STR for both tested GreatAxes but on a mob having a VIT almost equal to yur STR). Only then yu should see a difference on, for example, Highest normalHit number and/or Highest Crit. But that can take yu 20 WSs like 200 :/ GL.

EDIT: after reading some of the theories posted, there is one i think should hold some water: against Imps. Have you check if Latent activates under Amnesia status?

Steel Cyclone would be confounded due to its 50% VIT mod and the VIT on Gawain's Axe. King's Justice would be the best.

No, KJ is multi hits, lot harder to "see". And who said gotta use Gawain and not another GA ?

I'd say they picked Gawain's because it has DMG: 90 like Foolkiller does.

Aye. It's the only other D90 GA that's easy to get. The other option would be to compare a higher damage GA to Foolkiller and look for them to be the same when latent is activated, but you'd probably need a D93 GA due to FLOOR(FLOOR(.35*STR)*.83). D93 GAs are also hard to find.

It'd be funny if the latent only activated for Tarus, but kind of sad.

Yea, I'm not sure why I thought the difference between the two would be easy to see =/. But like other people said, since the two GAX's have the same DMG, and RR is STR modded, there should be a difference between the two.

Kinda sucks that 20 WS /w both wasn't enough to determine if the latent is active or not =/.
