I can't say how it compares to intel, but I bought an AMD Phenom II x4 920 BE a few months back and I'm thoroughly satisfied with it. I was told the Phenom IIs run with less power required and much cooler. I don't do any overclocking, but the OEM heatsink is also pretty good, never hot for me.

im going to be running on a i7 920 and a BFG GTX 285+

im curious, do you think 3 gigs of DDR3 triple channel will be sufficient, for everyday multitasking/gaming? or should i just go with the 6 gb? i do want to run pcsx2/misc games and play XIV.

A single 4890 will run every game at max settings at 1680x1050.

Go with 6GB.. a GTX285 is gonna eat up a gig of memory on its own through system allocations.
