Doesn't really matter whether they hit anything or not, long as people see them launching the missile and they have some method of making their people believe they blew shit up or were successful in whatever they were trying to accomplish. (Queue their local gov't run media)

Seems to be the main reason they are doing this is because Il is getting more and more ill and doesn't want there to be a power struggle in his country come time of his replacement. One of the best ways to do it is propaganda in the media.

This is just my take on one of the possibilities for doing this and assumes that he really isn't bat-shit crazy (ie: my assumption on this is more than likely wrong, but still a possibility)

There are a lot of metal (iron, zinc, gold) deposits in NK, and a large amount of coal deposits. Without the coal it'd be pretty impossible for them to be isolationist and still generate enough energy.

If we are forced into war it could very well cripple our economy to the point of collapse. We already have a huge debt and a conflict would only ensure we are forced to default on the loans. That's a good reason for us to stay out of it, NK can't reach us with missiles anyways and China will be forced to deal with them.
