Windower and Windows 7

Hey there. Old time FFXI player returning to the game (at my lady's requiest), and having a bit of a technical issue.


POL/FFXI run just fine out of the box on my Release Candidate copy of Windows 7. however, when I attempt to use windower (I alt-tab a lot, and the built-in FFXI windows mode SUCKS), I just get a "windows is trying to find out why this program stopped responding" Error.

Granted, I know, that Windows 7 is fundamentally Vista without the suck, this doesn't help me, as all of my experience running FFXI on a PC is from the days of Windows ME, and a LITTLE bit with XP

Granted, I -can- run it through the built in windowed mode, but the performance is comparable to the days when I played FFXI on my old pentium 3 on a Geforce 2 card.

And yes, I'm quite aware that this is the technical equivalent of one of those "When I was your age, I walked to school 5 miles through three feet of snow, barefoot, uphill both ways." speeches, but the important thing to remember is that I was wearing an onion on my belt. (it was the style at the time.)

Have you tried using the beta "fixed" version of the windower that's linked to in the sticky above about FFXI + Win7?

no I haven't. Thank you for the input, I will try that out.

Yeah, the updated version of Windower runs fine on Win7, though you may also want to check your video drivers as well. Ran into a problem when I installed the beta 186 nvidia drivers where the game would start in windowed mode, but the console became inoperable. The release 186 drivers did clear this up however.

When I run the game in pseudo full-screen in windower, on win7, it just crashes. I have the updated hook.dll, but it only happens while in fullscreen. Not much of a big deal for me since I don't play the game anymore, but it's one thing I noticed when logging in about a week ago.

There's still problems "2boxing" windower on Windows 7 though right? Or did Aikar fix that in a recent hook update?

not sure if you got it working yet, but a couple things to help you out.

if you're running a widescreen format, don't use the v4 alpha of the windower, because it won't pin to fullscreen in a widescreen format, and there are also not many plugins currently available for it (it's a completely new program, so the plugins for windowerV3 don't work on it)...there isn't even timestamp

the windower 3.42 beta right below that in the windower forum > news works VERY well, and all windowerV3 plugins work, and i'd recommend using this version.


on a side-note, using windows 7 i haven't been able to get IME working on FFXI. i got it to work in AIM and notepad, but for some reason i can't switch keyboard language from eng > jpn. if anyone has any help for me on this situation, it would be greatly appreciated

This has been a problem since Vista actually.

I've been running Windows 7 for awhile with no problems, including FFXI with the fixed hook.dll file from windower.net.

As far as dual/tri-boxing.... I run into a screen flickering problem in the game window. I'm running the latest NIVIDA drivers for Win7 but if I've got 2 instance of FFXI running, the character picture flickers. It's like they are interfering with each other. When I move one character, you can see it 'ghosting' over the other screen.

Running 1 instance of FFXI does not produce this result and FFXI is the only game I would normally dual-box.

Performance wise, besides the flickering... it's fine. I can run 3 FFXI screens without over-stressing the system.

Lastly, my current GFX card is a XFX GTX 285.

It's been running beautifully for me. Just make sure to run it as admin and set UAC so it doesn't dim your desktop when it asks for admin permissions and you're golden. Can even dualbox.

Update from my post:

NVIDIA put out some new drivers on 7/21/09. These drivers fixed my problem that I described above. Additionally, I neglected to mention that I was running dual monitors, not just one screen.

Also, Windower 3.4 with the RC Hook.dll file from Windower.net, works fine for me. No crashes that I didn't cause myself.

so does anyone know how i might get IME working?

i can get it working on notepad, on AIM, and on another MMO i play, but not FFXI ><;
