Also, my college campus is in downtown Birmingham. As a student who takes classes at night and has to walk a few blocks to and from my car, and taking into account a recent case where a freshman girl was shot to death in a campus parking lot... yeah I'm pretty sure my situation warrants my having a weapon, and you're an idiot.

I'm not trolling you, I'm pointing out that you don't need a gun for protection. I will grant you that "downtown Birmingham" sounds pretty terrifying though. Especially compared to Washington, DC. I'll make sure I'm packing in case I ever visit.

If you didn't own a gun, a weapon that you are FAR more likely to use to hurt yourself or someone you care about than a bad guy, this would never have happened.

This is one of the most skewed statistics I've ever heard of. I'm not going to get into another gun control debate here, but the numbers you're referencing are a drop in the bucket compared against the number of gun owners who are never forced to use their weapons. "Far more likely" is weasel words at it's finest.

Good, you should be fine, just continue to be contrite and don't get uppity about "well he shouldn't have looked in my bag anyway omg bill of rights".

Melchiah, I think you need to make two distinctions here:

1) Was it wrong for your boss to have searched your bag without your permission? Sure.

2) Regardless of your reasons for having the gun, do you see how what your boss did was the most safe and most responsible choice? Clearly you know yourself well enough to assert you weren't going to shoot up the place and the gun was for your protection, but to assume your boss knows as much is pretty asinine. What if you were deciding to go on a rampage? And your boss comes up to you, talks to you about the gun and it sets you off for whatever reason? Pretend you're your boss - why take that risk? And as you, why are you asking him to take that risk? It's not fair to him. And yes we all acknowledge you were wrongfully searched, that wasn't fair either, but the two situations aren't of equal severity.

So don't be stupid and leave your gun in your backpack anymore.
