When I first read the title, I thought "ineffective troll, etc." It wasn't until I realized that the author was someone actually worth listening to under normal circumstances that I saw that this topic was serious.

I hate these threads, they're worse than the most inane drama threads. I always have a strong feeling to avoid them like the plague, and I tend to until I see someone I usually believe to be reasonable taking a completely uneducated and illogical stance while confusing objectivity with apathy or 'education' with self-righteousness. These topics are almost always a sounding board for every thought that may as well start with "I'm not racist, but..." (either side.) Of course, like every drama thread, no middle ground can be found since all sides are on the defensive; One side objects to attempts to invalidate their deeply held beliefs, whether they're overreacting or not, while the other feels that they're being guilted or are expected to feel sorry for persecution that they have nothing to do with directly (either side). This happens because both sides forget what the argument is about and direct all their criticisms are each other. Also, there can't help but be a lean on one side of the issue depending on what group you're talking to. That's all acceptable, in and of itself, but the arrogance created by popular opinion tends to destroy all objectivity. So, as is my MO, I shall voice my opposition to what appears to be the popular side of the thread, if only for the purpose of creating a counterpoint that otherwise might not exist.

The basic idea of racism is generalization. Since you based your 'general population' on the handful of obnoxious black people you've heard say the word racist in any context and you seem to think this is a negative point, by definition....That doesn't mean you hate black people, it means you weren't careful in how you wrote the topic...as far as I know, anyway...


After seeing the trailer, I can honestly say most of it seems to be fine. It wasn't until the firefly with the fucked up teeth and the old black woman slurring that I realized it was RE5 all over again (or maybe more relevant, Pocahontas all over again). No, The Princess and the Frog is not racist in the sense that Disney believes that Black people are inferior to others (at least not consciously). It is a stupid, ham-handed attempt to pander to a group by reinforcing crass, tired stereotypes. It isn't simply the insensitivity of portraying them as such (it is possible for characters to be wacky and still come off as 'black' without such characterization), it's the idea that black people will be attracted to it automatically. THAT'S what bothers me and that's what black people usually mean by 'racist'; 'An incredibly lack of empathy.' There is no other single word that better approximates that feeling. I admit it has become a catch-all, but the only times I hear it used incorrectly is by dumbasses anyway, and you can't use them as an example. It's illegal in these parts.

"It's just a Disney movie." is a difficult tack, because Disney films USED to mean sweeping epics, even if they've been shit after shit more recently. To be fair though, it doesn't take a great understanding of black culture (if you can call it that ~_~; ) to create something appealing to children that they can identify with as a people.


I'll end this by revealing something funny. Most normal black people are so afraid of saying the word racist and then become bogged down in accusations of 'pulling the race card' they usually wont say anything in groups where blacks make up less than 60%. The only reason you heard it in that movie theater is because there was anonymity, like an internet message board.

We've been having protests(with people of all races) every week due to the premier Ewart brown conspiring with the US to bring in those gitmo guys without asking anyone if it was fucking ok in addition to other stupid crap he's been doing for a long time.We have no real problem with them staying here but we kinda would have liked to know about it first and giving them a house and whatnot when there's a housing crisis that's been brewing for YEARS tends to get people agitated too.
