So a question... not sure if anyone else has to deal with this. I have a laptop that came with Windows Vista Business 64 and Windows XP 32 downgrade.

Since I hated Vista I downgraded to XP. The question is that, do I have to backup to Vista before Win7 upgrade works? Or will it install fine via XP?

You can upgrade from either. The difference is that if you have XP, you're going to have to back up your files, format, and install windows 7. If you have Vista, you can upgrade without having to format the hard drive (though you should back up your stuff anyway)

Technically, no. You can request keys from Microsoft as long as you have the original copy and are installing it on a "new" system... although by their TOS you have to have either multiple licenses purchased or multiple copies.

I currently have 2 computers and 1 laptop in our house that are all running windows xp, and it looks like only one of them will be able to run windows 7. However, I'm going to be getting a new PC this fall and I'm pretty sure I'll be needing a full edition of windows 7 to install on this new machine. I'm pretty sure I can't install the upgrade disk on a new PC so am I correct in thinking that getting a full edition of windows 7 is probably my best choice?

Windows 7 should upgrade from Vista fine and you have until January 31, 2010 I believe to redeem the upgrade voucher. Should not need a full install since 7 file structure is based on Vista.

Pretty sure that if you have Windows 7 RC installed you can't upgrade to Real version, right?

(pretty sure you cant cuz you pass from RC ultimate to Real Home/pro)
