    So, my new computer.

When it arrives sometime later this week it ships with Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

But the deal that Alienware has given people is that it also comes with a voucher for a free copy of Windows 7.

Now I've heard awful things about Vista so im wondering what you techy people think of what i should do.

Should i keep Vista Ultimate (with SP1) or move to 7 immediately?

Move to 7 immediately. Vista is the ME of the current OS generation. 7 is to vista what XP was to ME.

SP2 is out now, catch up with the times man!

But seriously, it doesn't honestly matter. I've never had any issues making Vista do what I want it to do. Use whichever OS suits your flights of fancy and does what you want it to do the most efficiently. If you don't currently know which that is, this is why the geeks above invented the dual boot. It will always be my advice to take anything and everything people tell you with some salt unless you have personal experience with it yourself - and even then sometimes you need to reexamine that as well, or you'll wind up looking like a fool.

Vista is fine. It's gotten a very bad negative stigma but I know a lot of people who love it and have had no problems. Most are gamers. It's certainly not as bad as ME was >_>

I use vista ultimate 64 and I haven't had any compatibility/software issues, but then again, I only play ffxi, aion, and cs. Like Kryssan said, dual boot, try both. The only gripe I have with vista is that it doesn't want to save my windows explorer settings. Not the size of the window, how I sort my files, etc. It'll save for a day and then reset D:

Oh, and transferring files over a network through vista is terrible.

If you've never used Vista... I say go straight to 7. Not that vista is near as bad as everyone tries to make it, but if you're going to swap to something you're not familiar with... might as well be the newest OS.

    I'd agree with this.

I love vista, but you'll barely be getting used to vista before you have to switch your OS again.

Alienware isnt giving you a deal, Microsoft announced last week that any PC purchased with Vista (between June 26-Oct 22) will be eligible for free Windows 7 upgrade. My reference is a leaked memo, but I know there was also an official announcement.

Tech-Ex: Leaked Memo Disses Vista, Details Windows 7 Upgrade Program / Pricing

Customers who buy Vista PCs between June 26th and October 22nd (Windows 7 launch day) (October 22) will get a free upgrade copy of Windows 7

From my experience with Vista it was pretty much cleaned up by SP1 and cleaned up even more with SP2. So it'll be fine. However with all the extra wide beta testing that MS did on Win7 and how rock-solid the release candidate feels, I don't see any reason not to take advantage of a free upgrade.
