Looks like they chose Naoki Yoshida as new director to replace Tanaka because he got a lot of experience on MMORPG, like 13 years of MMO gaming.
He played Diablo (1 year) > Ultima Online (2,5y) > Unreal Tournament (FPS) > Diablo II (0,5y) > DAoC (6y) > EverQuest and WoW

His favourite FF is FFVII because it's close to what he wants to do on FFXIV.

He wants to revamp the game for more weak spec PC to be able to run FFXIV.

And Minagawa Hiroshi is doing the new UI of FFXIV, his last works were on Tactics Ogre PSP remake's UI and SQEX web contents.

This could mean he prefer to have characters instead of classes/jobs? I doubt he's referring to the steam punk setting so the only other thing I can think of is that FF7 was maybe the first FF title to ditch the job stuff almost entirely (well, if you don't count Limit Breaks, sorta)

It's a bonus that he didn't play FFXI because people want more than just FFXI-2... and as far as I'm concerned they need to bed the complaints that they should have just HD reskinned FFXI instead of making XIV.

Given the MMOs listed, if he gets a good idea going, he could possibly make the game into something that can compete with WoW without being branded as just another clone of it.

yea I would have been happy with HD XI minus the emphasis on world drop NMs and more instances. Keep the good, get rid of the bad, less grind, more play. Guess that really isn't possible but they really over did it with the grind.

Isn't DAoC PvP heavy? Fuck. New direction = factions with open world PvP.

Pretty funny that the guy hasn't supposedly played XI though. I'd say it can be a good thing at this point. Even if he wanted he can't make the game a WoW copy anymore but it sure as hell won't be FFXI-2 either. Still, some of the stuff he says is quite worrisome. Hopefully he can find the middleground between copy paste and changing stuff that shouldn't be changed.

So thinking about this a bit I think this MAY be a reason why we've seen so little content in update and only really seen UI and technical changes. I'm guessing some big and hopefully drastic changes are in store.

From what I've seen this guy is a relative unknown and so this is his career defining moment. He can either prove himself or fall to the wayside. I'm hoping he has the yarbles to do the former.
