That would be horrible, fixed stats are better unless theyre going to implement some sort of merit based system again.

I much rather prefer fixed stats, and as much as people complain about them, I actually liked the merit system in FFXI, it's just that with many jobs there were a certain number of merits that you had to have, and the rest were utter crap. It would be so much better if you had a choice at what you wanted, and picking one didn't make you a total gimp for picking it.
I'd like it if FFXIV actually allows different builds for a single 'job' instead of just replacing the last set of gear with the next.
This is more due to people following a min-max cookie cut build than only certain merits being worth it. While some merits do suck, there were others that were simply less useful than others which fell to the wayside because you wanted to min-max. Merits aren't exactly easy to switch around, so it is justified. If you wanted to be different you could always pick up different merits, but you wouldn't because people would say 'why'd you take xxx merit instead of xxx merit' or insult how many ticks your regen is doing. lol
Ya.. for certain jobs, which merits to pick were obvious but for a job like DRG or PUP, there were definitely different builds lol. It would be nice to see FFXIV be more customizable and unique when developing a character but not so that it eventually leads back to everyone picking the same build because it's "better".

Apparently there will be no experience or leveling in this game. It will be weapon based, Ala FF9 / FFTA. There will still be jobs but it seems progression it based on weapons and other as-of-yet unmentioned methods.
Perhaps completion of story-line quests directly influence your character attributes? Let the speculation commence.
Old news just redone, I somehow don't like this idea of weapons being a big part of progressing your character though.
Ridill (Weapon Skill Level 245) RARE
ATK: 54
Occasionally attacks 2-3 times.
Learn "Double Attack"
Learn "Triple Attack"
On the Auction House for 70,000,000 Gil. Or camp the mob against 1324218374 other players.
Calling it now. lol If they do something similar to that it wouldn't be too bad as long as you're able to trade weapons with friends. "Yo lend me that Lance so I can learn Jump real quick." then go grindan.
Maybe something like a merit system that we have now in FFXI but expanded?
It would kinda be like a skill tree but more open rather than you need this skill "A" to learn skill "B".
Maybe it'll be like the whole Esper leveling system in FF3/6? hmm I guess that would require exp and leveling... I quit
I hope to see progression accomplished at least in part through completing Maat-like trials, a series of job-specific solo quests and scenarios through which you'd earn advanced abilities and special equipment.
I really dislike things that make you choose between certain options (spells in this case), and you can never get any of the others again. At least in WoW, you can respec your entire talent tree whenever you feel like (as long as you have the money for it).
I guess the completest in me wants to have everything though.
The problem with that and with most other ideas that we've come across is the whole min/maxing thing. Theres always going to be that one choice that is the definite money shot. Like with merits now, "LOL YOU MAXED FIRE/EARTH INSTEAD OF THUNDER/ICE?! GTFO" They would need to make all the choices equally as strong/important which is hard considering there are so many things that need to be taken into account (Weaknesses, # of mobs weak to said elements, etc...)
That said, I would hate to have to choose between abilities. Gotta catch em all! :X
Yeah, I don't like choosing between abilities, either. I'm sure there will be plenty of variety in FFXIV even if they don't copy all 20 jobs from FFXI. They've already said your weapon will determine your playstyle, and that you can switch freely like in XI.
It's also possible (maybe it has been mentioned before, i'm not sure) that you will learn abilities/spells like we are used to but your choice of weapon will restrict you from using certain spells/abilities. As an example: using a shield as warrior will give you access to defender and remove berserk and using a two handed weapon does the opposite.
What it seems to me is.. It will be close to the lines of FF9. You equiped weapons and armor with abilities on it. Now when you killed a mob you gained points for those abilities.
Im not saying it will be 100% like this. But they keep saying weapons will be the key to growth..
