One theory about democracy is that to survive, it has to vote in a dictator. The book was written by a communist, so. . .

Can't fake a coup. You ever been in a fight that could easily be avoided, but you let it happen anyway since you are sure you can win?

I think guartz is just trying to comfort his staunch pro-capitalism with zany talk about a massive leftist conspiracy. the reality about (international) capitalism in Latin/South America is a bit much to stomach.

Honduras was considered to be the first Banana Republic.

I'm glad someone mentioned this before I did. Zelaya's efforts to get another term in office might not be on the level, but a fucking military coup is not the democratic way to resolve the problem.

By the way Egon, Newt Gingrich tweeted something of similar tone & concern yesterday too. So don't feel too bad - you're in pretty good company in not understanding foreign affairs and being on the side of undemocratic military coups in Latin America. Stick with it and you'll be the next John Negroponte with your very own death squad in Central America.

I don't think democracy is the way to go in third world countries, I have a hard time even believing it works in "educated" countries. People in general are complete fucking morons who follow the leader. If the guy they look up to says lets vote for this, the legions of lemmings will follow suit.

You know me too well, Beckwin.

Before the lies regarding capitalism and free market spread too thick, I just want to point out, the companies themselves are not hiring mercenaries and committing coups. The government is doing that. Like it always does.

the capitalist elite "hire" the government, which is a much better buy than mercenaries.

Semantics, but regardless, protectionism is not possible on this scale without a country, and an entity with monopoly on force in that country.

Did the east-Indian company hire the British throne? ...semantics.

when you say protectionism, are you talking about protecting local businesses and ensuring a people enjoy the fruits of their labor and resources or protecting the interests of capitalist multinationals?

I kinda agree with you.. I think it would be very beneficial for these countries to adopt the parliamentarian model (elected legislature w/ prime minister). It seems the traditional American-style republic just doesn't work for them because presidencies adopt far too much power & corruption.

Parliamentarian models of democracy exist largely where the British and/or Europeans had colonial and/or post WWII influence, we pretty much prevented that for the majority of Central/Latin America.. so really all this stems from us, even going beyond the whole banana republic/propping up rightwing dictators to supply us w/ cheap goods foreign policy to like the Monroe Doctrine when we told Europe to gtfo lol.

America. Fucking up its Hemisphere since 1823.

Anyways, parliamentary democracies would probably be as unsuccessful as American style republics because they still wouldn't address the fact that all these countries have had a ruling elite vs working class power struggle for the last 100+ years and w/e side is in charge of parliament will still likely drift towards the same left/right wing dictatorships that have plagued the area for a long time with their opposition drifting towards militias and civil war.
