Now this is a horrible argument that was on the Colbert report, but I feel it is relevant lol: How can we predict the climate change of 10s of years if we can't get the weather for tomorrow right?

Oh, that's easy. Just look at the past reports. For Akron, OH, our average temperature in February 2010 was 27 degrees. In march, it was 44 degrees. At this rate, February 2020 will have an average temperature of 2067 DEGREES HOLY COCKBALLS BATMAN!

What data are you looking for specifically? The global warming thing in the present is all about politics and making money. I don't care about Gore and what every Tom, Dick and Harry on Capitol hill have to say about it because they are simply parroting what they are being told to look good in public.

But we know that over the course of billions of years that the Earth has and continues to undergo change. We have well documented proof of periods of extreme heat and extreme cold, but what im saying is how can you say that there is no proof that humans cant accelerate it? All we have to do is look at Venus and how it basically has trapped CO2 over millions of years and is now a sweltering furnace. So you're saying that even though we are spewing tons of the same element here on Earth that we are not contributing to the transformation?

I honestly don't see how you can say that with a straight face. Most scientists don't want to get caught up in the whole politic thing of it when we are already underfunded as is. I mean we can look at other planets and bodies in space and get a glimpse into possible future scenarios here for Earth. In this case look solely at our beautiful goddess of the night.

Agree with that 100%. Scare tactics dont work, but most people only respond to fear. But I agree with this statement.

One of my biggest concerns over global warming is how hard it is to reverse the effect. We'll either do something about it now, or do something about it once it's effect starts to take a drastic toll on our lives. However, once it's effect becomes drastic, it's too late to do anything about it.

I agree that scare tactics don't work, but I also think there should be some level of "fear", I guess. By fear, I mean concern. It frustrates me when I see people acting as if global warming doesn't exist at all whatsoever. I don't care if people are less concerned about it than I am, I just hate when people pretend it doesn't exist at all, or that humans don't contribute at all, or that we shouldn't do anything about it at all whatsoever.

It was hotter in New Jersey than Florida yesterday. Global warming is happening faster than we thought! Ahhhh!

But on a serious note, yeah it is frightening how hard it is to reverse, considering that it could provide a snowball effect (Water Vapor is the worst Greenhouse gas, hotter it gets, more water evaporates, more it intensifies the heating effect, at least to my understanding that's possible).

This is what I don't think people realize, there is only a slight window of opportunity to do anything about it, but on this issue more than others people are politically motivated. "Sean Hannity said it was a joke so its a joke.." People like that make me sad.

I can't quite remember who said this, but the best quote I've heard on a subject was by an author that, when asked about whether he believed global warming was real and to what extent, said (paraphrased): "I don't know, but it seems to me that the only sensible course of action is to act as if it was. We don't have another planet to run the experiment on in case we're wrong."

10,000 years ago it was roughly 4~7 degrees cooler worldwide, CO2 concentrations were at 180 ppm.

In the late 1700's/pre-industrial revolution 1800's, it had warmed 4~7 degrees, and CO2 concentrations went up to 280 ppm or so.

Looking at that, it would seem that adding 100 ppm to the global CO2 levels would raise temperatures roughly 4 to 7 degrees, because CO2 is clearly the main factor in global temperature changes.


Since the 1800's, CO2 has gone up to 390 ppm, how much warmer has the planet gotten?

a) 4 degrees
b) 7 degrees
c) 0.7 degrees
d) 3.5 degrees

The answer is: c) 0.7 degrees, FUCK, WE'RE ALL DOOMED!

Edit: note, I realize it isn't that simple, but it's fun to point out things like this... or that the increase in CO2 has historically followed the increases in temperature, suggesting that higher temperatures lead to greater CO2/Methane/Etc concentrations, and that both of those share an outside cause.

Leaving the issue that, if we're definitely increasing the CO2 levels, but increases in CO2 have generally been a result of higher temperatures, what is different about our modern CO2 that makes it raise temperatures, and why is the possibility that it could be another factor discarded as though it has been falsified?
