She should be more famous. Every time people talk about famous women in history, the only person from the science fields I ever hear about is Madame Curie. I assumed Noether was a guy because otherwise she'd be talked about more when these type of subjects came up considering how important her work is. Just like when we first hear of Dirac/Euler/Hilbert/Leibniz/etc, we just automatically assume it's a white guy because we'd know if a women or African American made huge contributions.

I'm doing a presentation tomorrow on Group Theory Applications to Physics and I just happen to stumble on this while looking for a proof of Noether's theorem.

Lessee, in the nuclear field alone I can name Lise Meitner (helped discover nuclear fission), Berta Karlik, Ida Noddack and Marguerite Perey (plugged in gaps in the periodic table helping the nuclear field), Maria Goeppert Mayer (part of the nuclear modeling team), Harriet Brooks, Fanny Gates, and Chen Shiung Wu (others that helped develop the field), and Rosalyn Yallow (more recently, Nobel prize winner that developed radioimmunoassay).


You should get out of those books more. Or maybe the answer is to delve deeper into them?

I've never heard of any of these people, but if their contributions are significant to science (and it sounds like they are), then they should be more recognized too when we talk about women's history in school/on TV/etc.

And I don't think getting deeper in the books would help lol. If I come across the name of someone who did something huge, I assume the person is neither female nor african american for reasons I described above (i.e. I would have heard about it). My k-12 experience would have me believe that Curie was the only female scientist ever lol. Of course, I knew she wasn't, but you don't hear of the others very much unless you're actually in a certain field they contributed to. But within the fields themselves no one cares who happen to have a vagina and who didn't.

Maybe I should actually start paying attention to the first names of famous people. I actually, I knew Noether's first name was "Emmy" (actually it isn't, but I thought it was), but I still assumed it was a guy.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I can't name a single female scientist who contributed anything huge outside of my own field (physics/math). I can't name any African Americans at all, even in my field. I'm not sure if any African American physicist have contributed anything huge, but there has to be at least one in math.

Edit 2: Now that I think about it, when I went to the APS conference, one of the presentations there was on blacks in theoretical/astro/particle physics. I think there were only 60 in the entire history including the guy giving the speech (58 more than I expected). And I'm not sure if any of them did anything huge. He had a list of their names, and the only one I even recognized was NDT.
