Hey, some of us still need to get into grad school, lol.

    I think this is nerdier:

At the very least it wouldn't push you down any further on here than you were already:

    So fuck it, why not?

Does your school require extracurricular activities for grad school? I'm genuinely asking since I don't know if they look at that, I always thought it was just GER scores and undergrad GPA.

Its starting to look like I could easily go into the astrophysics grad program here if I keep my grades up and do well on the gre but I would like to set my sights higher than a grad program here, even if I don't. Go beyond here I think it'd be silly not to at least aim for the best now and see where I am in two years.

As long as you'd have time for it without sacrificing in your other studies (I'd add a few more hours per week to what you're studying this semester, as the work load and difficulty is going to increase a bit once you get to core physics classes) I'd say it might be interesting, depending on the other people joining you. I wouldn't have time for it, but I'm also dumb and taking 17 credits plus working ~15 hours a week. Plus you don't have to worry about girls thinking you're even more of a nerd lol

Yeah the last is a big plus lol. I do have to decide though soon, they just (as of like two weeks ago) approved astrophysics as an undergrad major here and my advisor put me on as the first to sign up, plus I want to do the honors program which is extra 18 credits to major + history club and sps shits. I want to keep some free time but I also want to make sure I have an appealing application for grad school. Right now I'm lucky with fafsa + unsub loans but its a delicate balance and I need to be prepared in case I ever don't get full loans or a scholarship.

Shit sucks, so much to do so little time.

Oh yeah and I started lightly playing ff15 because I am fucking retarded.

probably a repost, its been on YT for a year.

and this won't be anything new/interesting to the core group of posters on this thread, so ignore it.

but i really enjoyed it, as a casual follower of cosmology and shit. i'm sure there are many others like me that may enjoy this as well.

I posted it a few months ago but it's worth watching again (like 15th time).

Clearly his school's physics department is much better than the rest of ours.

Speaking of physics departments, I'd kill for some working lab equipment right about now

if you're talking about an undergrad lab, don't fuckin' count on it

This. Another difference between my engineering courses and my physics courses, the labs always work perfectly for engineering. We even have fairly state of the art oscilloscopes and other toys. I guess this is what happens when you pay an extra $60 per credit for engineering schools, whereas physics courses don't have that extra fee.

I wish Dawkins, Hawking and him would shut up for once. The amount of philosophical conclusion they reach in the name of sciences piss me off

I had the "pleasure" to hear Krauss speak for 1h at McGill university last year (or maybe it 2 years ago), and he made me rage the whole time. That being said, he is still kinda interesting, and pretty funny. I just wish he would stick to actual sciences, and not all the random philosophy bullcrap.

I have zero problems with scientists going beyond the data a bit and thinking in big picture terms. Sagan, Feynman, Darwin, Collins, Hooke etc etc have done it since forever. We desperately need more scientists willing to think big picture and use a touch of creativity to inspire.

I have no issue with scientists going beyond data , but these guys do it in such a pretentious way it pisses me off. They insert their opinions amongst scientifics evidences and leave it at this.

Smart people are smart enough to know when they are doing sciences, and when they are philosophy, but everyone else take their opinion for granted. In the end, it doesn't really matter, but it annoys me on the same level popular sciences annoys me.

This is also how science gets popular in the mainstream. There is a reason why Hawking et al are good for science. The more of these guys there are to explain science to the public, the more little kids that may want to get into a scientific career. Imagine how many people Neil de Grasse Tyson have inspired to learn more about science. If scientists just stuck to science and didn't think about the ramifications of what they were sciencing, shit would be a boring field. Also, we aren't going to get funded for shit if the public doesn't think whatever we want (ie helping out our space exploration program) has any value. Most of my friends think NASA is a waste of money.

Yes, sciences in general need more visibility in the public. However, it's still not an excuse to do half assed popular sciences or philosphy. If you want to break away from sciences neutrality, then mention it, or at least, make it obvious in your speech.

Exactly, I think most of us think (and I completely agree) that knowledge for the sake of knowledge is a noble and useful thing to pursue. But try selling that to a talented grade schooler who sees the money and prestige associated with fields outside of STEM. Heck, a basic science sales pitch doesn't float to the NIH anymore.

On a related note, nobel for phys/med this year went to an IVF pioneer. Hugely deserved, but that was and still is an issue that forces the public as a whole to speculate (necessarily) outside the realm of science. I think it's appropriate that scientists have a voice in those sorts of outside the box issues.

When I attended Krauss' conference last year at Mcgill, there was not a single person in the room who wasnt in the field already. Despite this, he talked about the same stuff you see in this video. Was he trying to sell us how fun physics is?

I don't know....like I said before, it's important to convince people, especially kid, of the importance of sciences, but there is better way to do it than this.
