Lead ions, protons stripped out of gold, a huge system of circular tunnels which spans across nations, worries of impending doom being dismissed because they're absurd.

Arcane experiments involving the very structure of matter itself, long time scales, difficult for outsiders to understand what is going on.

I was making a joke about the LHC being similar to the Amestris circle from FMA: B.

Oh, speaking of nerds, yesterday I asked a group of people in the math department if anyone happen to have a periodic table with them. Every single one of them pulled one out, thus proving that mathematicians are just as nerdy as physicists, if not more so.

Is it bad that I misread that as periodic table and thought "Oh, mine's on the first page of my chem book next to me!" Then realized it said period table?

It is actually Elegant Universe that I am just finishing now. I certainly haven't really read anything recent making a non-string theory arguments so it will be something fresh. I'm mostly drawn to Brain Greene's writing not so much for the string theory per se but he really explains everything so clearly and uses helpful analogies.

Someone said Smolin? Take some no-doze beforehand, just a word to the wise.

I dunno, it looked like the period when it was WARMER 8000 to 5000 years ago has MORE forested area, and in general that colder climates INCREASE the number/size of deserts. It makes sense when you notice that colder periods have far more water locked up in glaciers/ice caps, leading to increasingly arid conditions.

    What am I missing?

If that's the case, why is there a bigass desert in present time even though we're not locked in a glacial maximum? By all accounts the savanna should be a lush paradise by your logic, since even the arctic is disappearing , and yet, we're seeing desertification in africa and elsewhere spreading.

It was warmer 8000~5000 years ago, by more than the IPCC "catastrophic warming projections" in some areas. There was no ice cap during significant stretches of the Holocene optimum. When it began to cool towards present temperatures, deserts spread to the current levels.

This. I forgot to mention how boring Smolin can be. In fact, the only reason I haven't read Trouble With Physics yet is because I don't know if I can handle a Lee Smolin book. I tried to read his book on Quantum Gravity and it was just so boring to me. If you're used to good writers who keep it really interesting (like Greene), you're going to find Smolin a bit dry.

Anyone past their third year of a B.Sc. should have read enough literature by that point to be able to handle any sort of writing, no matter how boring it is.

I'm just saying. Kudos to anyone who hasn't fallen asleep while reading a journal before.
