    Good read. lol http://www.cracked.com/article_19117...t-warning.html
If we geared up a new telescope tomorrow only to find one coming in from a previous blind spot as close as, say, one light-year away, we'd still have a few centuries before it would fry us, cause a cataclysmic collision within the solar system, and inflict some pretty intense gravitational disruptions. You're not going to be alive in a few centuries, though; that's the future's problem. And really, fuck those guys. All flying around in their precious jetpacks like they're better than you. They deserve what they get.

The following is mostly wrong, they are talking about Gamma Ray Bursts:

If one happens in our galaxy -- basically anywhere in our galaxy -- it could effectively end us by boiling away most of the ozone layer and, following up for a two-hit combo, bombarding the Earth with insane amounts of UV radiation. Luckily, our current measuring equipment says these happen relatively rarely in the universe:
One of the poles of the star going supernova would have to be pointed directly at Earth for it to affect us. Since most of the stars form a plane in our galaxy, that is most unlikely to happen from within the Milky Way.

Oh I'm sure there's a lot of shit wrong with it, but it's a comedy piece so I'd just take it for what it's worth.

I guess that's one of the only bad reasons for being good at science. You lose all sense of humor if the joke isn't factually accurate

Happens to me and my friends all the time. They'll make some science joke and I'll Melvin in with "Actually, that can't happen".

You've got your plate full if you think that is actually a side effect of being good at science.

The stuff about Magnetars is awesome. I didn't know that.

How far away would we need to be from a direct gamma-ray burst for it to not cause severe damage?

That is exactly how I think all of my engineering classes are going to be

Anyway, uh, I had to do a simple math evaluation for a position I'm applying for. I had pretty much everything except for this one problem. Find the missing number in the series 1, 4, 27, _, 3125. It was multiple choice and I guessed 115. No idea what the fuck series that is, and I'm pretty sure I'm missing something simple, since the rest of the evaluation was all simple math.

Fuck damn it lol. I was going to pick 256 just because it seemed a better choice. I also feel really dumb

I kept trying to do something with the difference between, not even close lol.

I just found out that I'm going to be study solar cells this summer. Not sure if want, to be honest, but it's better than nothing.
