Assuming it is true that black holes bleed off 'stuff' (matter, radiation, whatever), would it be possible to see this effect from a larger hole that is presumably attracting large amounts of matter, which is altering its size?

    Is it possible that black holes are only stable past a certain size?

    You can see the massive jets coming off most spiral galaxies central black holes. Either they will continue to spray this matter out until they have nothing left to feed on, and then come to an equilibrium, or the incredible force within them will continue to force this matter out until it dissipates enough and no longer has the mass to contain the singularity. Who knows.

    I know, but Relativity is sort of my primary field.

    The jets are not caused by matter emitted by the black hole, they are matter which was falling into the black hole and got compressed by the immense tidal forces as it did so. The stresses on the accretion discs cause them to emit energy up to and including x-rays, and these tend to get bent by the gravity of the hole, and it's own tremendous magnetic field so they spiral upwards and leave the hole at one of the poles, bringing tremendous jets of accretion disc material with it.

    Those are not material which has left the hole itself, it has merely left the gravity well which the hole dominates.

    Theoretically. Another possibility is that the matter coming into the singularity occupies the same space creating massive amounts of heat/energy and forcing an expulsion of that same matter along the axis.

    Woozie I was meaning to show you this and tell you on Yahoo the other day before you went to your sister's house but Dr. Tyson added me to his AOL and Gtalk messenger two week ago lol. Well my daughters birthday was this past weekend and he was wanting to know how it went, if she enjoyed her gifts he sent etc..

    So I get in today and have this email in my Inbox from one of his assistants who asked for my address again. It's funny that he is so enamored with the idea of a 9 year old being literally star struck by everything in the Cosmos. She wont tell me what is being sent though lol. Woozie, you and I have talked long and and many times about this side of NDT, she totally has the being a female, a minority and a kid working in her favor and you know how he is regarding us black folks is Science and Physics as is. His book "The Sky Is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist" goes into detail about his life around the same age of my daughter.

    Anyway, looks like I have more free goodies incoming. He also offered for when we come to NY to stay for a few days because there were people that he would like us to meet and such. To think, all of this from a book signing. He is mad cool and always down for chit chat and friendship. I must say, I am impressed. I have met lots of athletes and "celebrities" living here in Charlotte but I've never once been in awe... I'm not gloating so don't take it as such, I feel like one of those New kids on the block groupie bitches atm.

    By the way, do you know if NDT goes to the National Society of Black Physicists meetings? This guy at the APS march meeting asked me to go to it (the guy who invited me says he actually knows NDT). It's in DC, so it's not too far from Akron. I'm not sure if I'm going to go though, but I'm more likely to if NDT is going to be there.

    By the way, back on the "weight on a sheet representing gravity" analogy, would the indentation and contours of space-time affect perceived distances? e.g. when you place a marble on a sheet with a weight on it, it rolls down the contour toward the low point, representing gravity. However, this means the marble travelled farther to that point than if the sheet were flat (assuming it follows the surface of the sheet at a constant speed as it goes over the various contours in the fabric). And the heavier the weight, the further depressed the sheet is, and the more surface area there is on the sheet.

    Will we feel this extra distance, compared to the sheet being flat?

    Will it take us longer to go from point A to B when a heavy object is in the middle than if there were nothing?

    Maybe that is what we perceive as inertia. Rather than appearing to move a longer distance that indentation is why it would take longer or more energy to get a heavier object to move.

    This is one of the arguments for a (positively) curved universe. If you draw a 180 deg triangle on an uninflated balloon, then blow it up, the triangle will have more than 180 total degrees, increasing the distance of the sides. So as I understand it, yes, you will travel a longer distance due to this bending. In a negatively curved universe, the triangle would have less than 180 degrees, in a perfectly flat universe, it would be exactly 180. I think in our universe, it is ever so slightly curved.

    Length dilation does occur in gravitational fields. Measurements of length does change due to the presence of gravity, kinda like how measurements of length change due to a difference in speed between two reference frames. But with that said, I'm not exactly sure how to answer your question because I don't study GR much. You're going to have to wait for Miz, Neo, or Max. I seriously doubt that Zoobernuts answer is correct because that would imply that the measure of inertia is completely dependent upon external gravitational fields.

    That is true woozie I did not think of that. I was just posting an idea that came up when I first read that. Though the more I think about it the more I realize that there would be problems involved in tying inertia to gravitational dilation.

    It would seem that observationally to humans we could not perceive that an extremely massive object was traveling a longer distance however it would be apparent in the time it takes to get to its destination.
