Actually it more than likely did, mind you, that the tail of a Comet is just a water vapor trail as the Comet gets closer and closer to the Sun as it traverses the Cosmos. Also don't forget that when we smashed a probe purposefully into Comet Tempel 1 back in 2005, we saw with our own eyes (thanks to the camera system mounted on the probe and the secondary probe trailing the suicide probe for sample analysis) that as much as 3 billion gallons of water was liquefied and drifted off of the comet just from that tiny impact.

3 Billion gallons is roughly what is in Lake Tahoe presently or a few of the Great lakes in Michigan and surrounding. I mean if you can extract 3 billion gallons of water from a 900 lbs probe, imagine what a Comet could deliver that is roughly 60 miles in diameter and is millions and millions of tons in weight?

I mean much of this is old news but still interesting. Science makes us check, double check, triple check and then when you think you're done check some more. We should see more information about this in the coming weeks. Ill certainly keep you guys posted.

Most of Earths water was here when it formed.

Plate tectonics is why it is so wet on the surface these days, and conversely, the presence of water promotes plate shifting.

Comets may have added some, but they would literally be a drop in a bucket, the organic compounds would be an interesting contribution though.

Why can't we sticky this? That way I don't have to make threads everyday.

Would probably be better to make a random question thread like in the FFXI subforums to cover math/science theory. For the most part this thread meets that, but it didn't start out with that intent really so there is extra flab and gristle in it.

'Large Science Collider' thread, and make it a sticky!

I want a countdown until the second the LHC goes live.

Is there going to be some video feed of the control room that we can watch when it actually does start up?

Not sure but I don't see why not, they did it the first time. I sat at work watching the countdown and watch all of the engineers walking around in front of the cam while they started it up.

That's a good question though and kind of makes me wonder.

I would definitely call in sick to work/skip class/wake up at an assy time of night to watch it. It's kind of funny how only 2 or 3 people will actually be working in that room at that time, the rest will just be watching what happens(or so I've heard on the science channel?).

The LHC is never going to start up because Miz keeps breaking it. It's all his fault. He can't deny it. There's definitely some parallel universe in which it's Miz's fault and he has yet to prove that this isn't that universe.

Seriously, you think Miz is cool, but keep in mind that in some parallel universe he probably plans to rob you at gun point. Are you all seriously going to just sit around while he breaks our billion dollar machines and then steals our cash!? Do you really think you can trust someone who would do such a thing!?

sorry havn't been keeping up w/ the thread tbh, but aren't the chances of creating miniature black holes astronomically low due to the fact that you'd probaly have unknown variables we dont have access to? dont think smashing particles together will do much of anything (again im no physicist or astro physicist just some one who's intrigued by the subject :D)

I think it has to do more with the fact of the amount of energy being used. The LHC can create up to 10^12 eV, whereas cosmic rays that smash into our atmosphere hit at about 10^20 eV, so 8 orders of magnitude larger than what we can currently achieve. This is what my Physics teacher said this semester, so I don't know how accurate that is. Miz or Woozie or some of the other guys can probably give a better explanation.

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiped..._hole_scenario gives a pretty good explanation on it

Eliseos is right. The LHC simply doesn't have nearly enough energy to create a black hole. It's a few powers of 10 too low.

Why would parallel universe Miz need to go to such lengths? All that need happen is for said poor scientists to ask Miz for directions, or *gasp* follow him around.
