So.. say I'm an effeminate male with a loose T-shirt building a sandcastle at the beach.

I tie my tee in a knot at the midriff, and call the knot matter and the tee spacetime. That's the version Max agrees with?

And the Higgs approach, instead, would say the sand are particles and the internal cohesion of the wet sand holding it together to form a sand castle (mass) would be the Higgs boson? With spacetime being the air surrounding it?

With the higgs model, the sand would be more like spacetime itself. Moving through sand gives resistance and the sand would stick to you and weigh you down. This would appear to give you more resistance to acceleration. We interpret this as inertia. So it's the movement through the sand that's responsible for mass.

This analogy is way oversimplified, but it's the best I can do right now.

The Universe is a body of spacetime and nothing else.

All the interesting little things we observe, all the interesting little things we're made of, should be resolvable as nothing but different states of the fundamental structure of spacetime itself.

The shape of the spacetime making up the quarks and electrons making up your hand is in a (most likely for the time being) stable series of knots.

The topological changes which would be required to untie those knots are more expensive than simply maintaining the knots themselves in their current state.

Tying them is an expensive process, pretty sure it requires a black hole to actually tie new knots btw, but leaving them tied is not.

You can have black holes and big bangs without singularities, singularities only arise in point particle models, they're a sign that you fucked up somewhere, just like infinite results from finite calculations are in mathematics.
Oh ok, then I would say I disagree with just about everything you just said.. Q.Q.

    But oh well.

Strings, strands, knots. I know some of you aren't big fans of string theory, but you should stop having similar naming conventions lol

I'm guessing with all the physicists, astronomers, medical practitioners, lawyers, mechanics, teachers, cooks, and laborers we have on BG, we could just create our own utopia after the LHC kills all of the loopy idiots.

A world free of religious persecution, pure scientific knowledge, and no Vajras spreading swine flu amongst the populace.

    *sigh*

If only I even began to understand physics.

Why would you want a utopia? It'd be boring as hell.

New Episode of "THe Universe" On the history channel at 9. Science channel has something about gravity at 8 apparently, and something about supermassive blackholes at 9.

Yep im on it! Its Tuesday also so I am waiting for NOVA to come on PBS. This is the last one of the season iirc, a great chance to see Neil for no other reason beside being awesome.

Dude did I tell you what he sent my daughter? This is package number 2 that he sent 3 weeks ago for her bday? She got a new telescope signed by him, 2 more of his books and 1 is a children s book he is working on and a shit load of NASA stickers.

He asked us to please come to NY after the school year because he is doing a special seminar involving his 2 kids and asked my wife and I if we would bring her to NY this summer. How awesome is that?

Not sure how much you guys know about Telescopes but the one she was sent was a 8" VMC200L free mount telescope. He wrote on it "Happy Birthday Wendy. Congratulations on your 9 trips around the sun! Stay smart and always reach for the stars! NDT"

I hadnt been on Yahoo because Ive been really sick but I was going to send you some photos Wooz.

Edit: Its an 8" not 10".

My post was heavily laden with 20% sarcasm. Come on now.

But seriously, I know jack shit about physics.

This really loses something when the titles are cut off in your sig.

huh? I'm using the silverblue forum style and it looks fine to me. Some of the styles were having issues with sigs a little while ago. I didn't even realize my sig was being cut off on the bottom for some people.

Edit: Yeah, you're right. On R-WH you can't see the bottom, which makes my sig kinda retarded lol. It's about time I revert back to my normal sig anyways.
