    Well, physics currently doesn't give an implicit phenomenonological definition.

    I am working on a model which would describe it as any deviation from a flat state for the underlying, sub-atomic structure of spacetime. A region with no curvature relative to itself would have no observable energy present to an observer such as ourselves.

    I know what Einstein meant when he made his statement: "Every Tom, Dick, and Harry these days thinks he knows what a photon is, but they're wrong."

    A photon isn't a little particle like doohickie, or some wave you could just stop and study. If you stopped a photon, it wouldn't be a photon anymore, they're just motion across spacetime.

    Space before energy or energy before space. Current physics model afaik don't allow you to answer this question, and if you take a guess, you're just moving the problem to the other variable.

    Got a last question about this. What kind of formalism should I use to change the d/dr to d/dz in the equation above. d/dr is an operator, and changing the denomitor for a*dz feel completely wrong. I know it works because it's a linear operator, but I'm curious to see how a mathemacian would write it.

    Totally forgot I asked this. In the end it's pretty much what I ended up doing for this part.

    I really need to kill this habit of butchering derivative into two elements. It works, but it's not pretty.

    You can't define energy as being somewhere without space, nor can you describe it effecting something without time.

    Spacetime first, it isn't a guess really.
    General relativity allow us to describe a space without anything in it, however, I did not know it was verified that a space can exists without any energy (it's not).

    You're correct that it is not shown if you can have a spacetime without energy in it, the VEV and such even suggest it is impossible.


    That's why I made the distinction that it (deviation from flatness on the subatomic structure of spacetime) is what would be observed as energy, heat, radiation, mass, whatever the case may be.


    Nonetheless, you can't really define energy as existing without a spacetime to define it in, one is more fundamental than the other.

    Being unable to define a spacetime without energy in it is just pointing towards them being related in an underlying manner, or even that one is just a part of the other. If spacetime was just a part of energy, where do you put the energy to define it so you can have the spacetime to put the energy in?

    If energy is just a part of spacetime, then it occurs wherever you define a spacetime.

    And now birds are trying to sabotage the LHC. Maybe it's birds from the future who are the destructive forces at work

    CERN is reporting that the Large Hadron Collider has been shutdown yet again after a piece of bread fell into the outdoor machinery. That part of the LHC's circuit normally operates at 1.9 Kelvin, but, thanks to the bread bomb, rose to 8 Kelvin, nearly causing the LHC's niobium-titanium magnets to cease superconducting. The incident could have crippled the LHC yet again — and caused significant physical damage to the lab had the LHC been fully operational at the time — but CERN claims that it won't delay the full reactivation of the device, scheduled for later this month.

    Technicians believe that a passing bird dropped the bread into the machinery, just the LHC's latest run-in with Murphy's Law.

    Seriously? Equipment that can be messed up that bad from a bread crumb is not protected and covered from the birds? WTF WERE THEY THINKING!


    They need to build a giant bubble over the LHC to keep everything out.

    I imagine it was an exposed electrical component for which open air cooling is beneficial, it may have been a heat sink as well that got interfered with by the bread, reducing it's efficiency.

    A Seattle-based team has won $900,000 in this year's Space Elevator Games, a NASA-sponsored contest to build machines powered by laser beams that can climb a cable in the sky.

    The homemade cable-climber built by the LaserMotive team climbed a 3,000-foot (900-meter) tether suspended by a helicopter at a speed of 8 mph (3.7 meters per second or 13 kilometers per hour) during a Wednesday attempt.

    LaserMotive's robot climber managed to get all the way up the cable four times in two days, with a best time of about 3 minutes and 48 seconds (translating to a speed of 3.9 meters per second).

    The feat was the best performance yet for a miniature space elevator prototype and qualified LaserMotive to win the lower-level prize of NASA's $2 million Power Beaming Challenge this week at the Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California's Mojave Desert. The contest requires competitors to beam power from a remote source to propel their vehicles up a quarter-inch-thick steel cable dangling from a helicopter.

    The 2009 Space Elevator Games are the first in which prize money has been awarded. This year's event was "a very successful competition," said Andy Petro, director of NASA's Centennial Challenges program. "Power beaming is truly a 21st-century technology."

    Despite LaserMotive's success, it is still a long way away from what would be needed to carry humans to Earth orbit, as proponents envision.

    Space elevators were first popularized in the 1970s by the science fiction novels of Arthur C. Clarke, as a means to reach space without using a rocket. Instead, a ship could climb along a fixed structure, like a beam or cable, suspended in space from a permanent geostationary satellite 22,000 miles (35,000 kilometers) above Earth. The sticking points are the need for a super-strong yet light material for the tether, and a good way to anchor the other end securely. Not to mention the vehicle to climb it.

    That's where the Space Elevator Games come in. Teams were required to use beamed power to send their robot up the cable at an average speed of at least 4.5 mph (2 meters per second or 7.2 kilometers per hour) in order to qualify for a portion of the $2 million prize purse. The competition is sponsored by the Spaceward Foundation and NASA's Centennial Challenges program, which is aimed to spur development in space exploration.

    An attempt by the Kansas City Space Pirates on Wednesday fell short of the speed requirement and got stuck partway up the cable during a Friday climb attempt. A climber built by the University of Saskatchewan Space Design Team was unable to compete during the three-day contest because of a series of technical glitches, NASA officials said.

    Had LaserMotive's entry managed to climb the entire length of the cable in under 3 minutes, at an average speed of 5 meters per second, it would have won the entire $2 million prize. As it stands, $1.1 million in prize money remains available for future competitions, contest organizers said.
    Pretty fucking awesome, even if it isn't quite a space elevator yet.

    I normally don't read these type of articles on cracked, but this one was pretty funny. And they brought up a valid point. For such a huge expensive machine, it really does seem like a giant pussy. I mean, seriously, a bird?

    I keep track of the developments of information technology and the study of the human brain.

    It should be possible within the next 100 years to transfer a human awareness into a machine.

    It should be possible before then to turn off the self-destruct devices embedded in our cells.
