Yes, I was referring to string theory. I don't really like string theory that much, but it's the only theory with extra dimensions that I'm decently familiar with. There's plenty of other interpretations of extra dimensions out there, but I'm not familiar with any of those.

    That debate was hilarious lol.

I'm 100% sure that Max is Pythagoras' reincarnation.

Slightly changing the subject, but is anyone very familiar or works with superconductivity? I have to give a presentation on it for my modern physics class (instead of a final, we give a presentation on a subject) next friday.

I had to do a presentation on it too, and I've even done experiments on it. Yet, I somehow don't really know much about it. Your presentation probably already covers everything I know plus more.

Edit: Well the experiments I did on superconductors used the ceramic kind (type II ?), and there's really no theory as to how those kind work as far as I know. The theory for low temperature superconductivity doesn't really apply to high temperature superconductivity.

All I really know so far is that there's the BCS theory which states the electrons in the lattice form Cooper pairs, and they have opposite spin thus making them bosons and they aren't subject to the Pauli exclusion principle. Also some guy got two different Nobel prizes, one relating to superconductivity. What sources did you use for your presentation? All I have right now is my textbook, another textbook which was written by the same author (Tipler), and Wikipedia lol. I only have 10-15 minutes to present on, plus time for questions, so I was probably just going to do a quick review of resistance/conductance, then go into BCS theory, then do some applications of it like MRI machines. I'm mostly worried about answering questions from my classmates lol, as I have huge stage fright and anxiety speaking in front of a group (even though my class has 8 people in it, including me).

I did my presentation like four years ago, so I don't remember what sources I used. Half of my info came from my modern physics book (thornton/rex third edition, your library may have it).

Why not borrow some from the LHC? I hear they're not using them.

Speaking of, this is one of the pictures I plan on using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:CE...s-p1030764.jpg

I seriously can't get over how much of a difference regular conduction and superconductivity are. That shit looks like an IDE cable or something.

EDIT: Also, Miz will be happy to know that tomorrow was the publication date of Origin of the Species.

Wait, you mean Origin of the Species hasn't even been published yet!? Holy crap tomorrow is going to be a historical day indeed!

I've already placed a pre-order on Amazon! I waited in line at his signing session, but he died before my place in line came

Mathematics contains all Spaces, so it should then contain Physics as well.

I didn't arrive at this the same reason Pythagoras did, more like the arguments Tegmark uses, it turns out.

The cooper pairs model for superconductivity is good btw, review it for sure, the bosonic behavior is a big part of why it works at all, helps when moving electrons around.

What!? That was an epic discussion! Have you never seen the movie Pi?? We are surrounded by numbers Kuya, don't you get it?

Incidentally, I've confirmed I'm Asperger's recently, discovered wrongplanet.net, all of a sudden I know there are other people in the world who understand why I have to stop the pullcord on the ceiling fan from swinging at night. The barely audible *tic... tip... tic... tip...* keeps me awake, and makes me want to murder.

Explains the physics obsession too, and the utter lack of the very ability to believe.

Are you referring to the discussion or to the sub-title of this: http://timesonline.typepad.com/scien...ing-great.html

"Yesterday afternoon, however, the LHC finally lived up to its name. Ignoring arguably the single most important piece of advice that the "Ghostbusters" films have to offer, the beam engineers skilfully crossed the two proton streams at the centre of the four experiments and collisions were recorded in each detector for the first time."

And everyone is so quiet about it! Anti-climactic indeed

"Personally, though, what's most exciting is that, after so long, we're back to doing things that are new. Things that we, and indeed no-one else, have ever have done before." A fun read!

Apparently, explains mostly why I don't have as much in common with the rest of the world.

I always thought you guys were nuts, guess I was right and wrong, I'm normal for ME, but not for you.

I'm interested in the proton structure results, but I'm still waiting for the big events, the full on collisions... that's when I'll be fully geeked out.
