lol, not since Cambell has been Premier. He's been raping unions for all their worth. The problem is, there's so much build up from the NDP there is a long way to fall.

(For the record: My mother is a union steward for the Nurses Union, I find out a lot of what goes on on the inside.)

we need to either privatize it like in Etobicoke (who by the way are enjoying business as usual) or make it an essential service, a la police etc and make it illegal for them to strike

you're right, it's public safety, it's not being disposed of properly, whether by public or by city

I live up by Yonge and St Clair, I've really only seen a saran wrapped garbage can, at work our pickup is contracted out so we're unaffected here

also, I think my building contracts out, however the recycle has been sitting on the curb for a while (has it been only 11 days now?), I have to say I was surprised by the photo in the OP

the last strike was disgusting: I went rollerblading on my way to a friend's house and cut across Dundas, through Chinatown which stinks on the coldest day in winter, let alone that day: a smog warning day in the peak of summer, 3 weeks into the garbage strike

I nearly vomited, I held my breath for 7 blocks as best I could

anyway this needs to be handled better

If they only striked when it was not going to stink then the strike wouldn't have half the impact. It's like saying they can only strike when it doesn't matter, which defeats the object of a strike. A 5-7% increase in pay doesn't really seem to be that much considering the fucking horrendous job they have to do every day. The smell you smell at the moment is what they have to smell every single day they go to work. Hands up how many people would want to subject themselves to the job of picking up other peoples shit for the pittance they earn at the moment.

Okay to address what I can at work, (hey Howard, I work at Yonge/St. Clair!), I'm pretty sure the actual dumps are being blocked off, and anywhere it isn't is striking ground. As well, it isn't just the garbage-people who are striking but all civil workers, I was just bringing up the most health-affecting group.

No, trash pickup isn't a right, but when it has been enforced for as many years as it has, the whole system revolves around mass garbage pickup instead of individual drop-off, so it isn't like we have a choice. I'm pretty sure if we have to choose between paying more money or 'getting the plague', that would mean they're holding us for ransom, which would not be a good thing to accuse them of doing, right?

5-7% increase is a lot for the amount of workers we are talking about, and again, we have no money, and we will continue on that path as long as they continue to strike.

I didn't write this to argue about their job (it's shitty, but there are worse with horrid pay and no benefits), and again, they've already done this before and got a raise in 2002. The entire economy is having a hard time, it isn't like low pay is only in civil work: PHDs are getting minimum-wage jobs. Ah.. I digress, the whole point was that this strike is becoming a health hazard and shouldn't be allowed to continue. Yeah.

I live 2 blocks away from one of their dumping sites. I don't notice any difference from Guelph. And when I say 5-7% it usually implies they want it over each of the next so-and-so years. I cant find a link to find true number but I heard someone ballpark that on he radio the other day. My other house is in Etobicoke and honestly our garbage system before was far superior before we somewhat merged with the TO system. Now we have to use those big ugly garbage cans that the garbagemen dont differentiate between garbage, recycling and compost. Although the trash is being taken out, we had a much better service a few years back.

Yonge and St. Clair you say? I'm Yonge and Eglington.

you sure it's a pittance? I'd bet they make more than I do at my cushy white-collar job, and I make a decent wage.

From my perspective people who spend all there days picking up the nations shit and debris deserve a more than handsome wage. I doubt anyone on these boards would take that job unless it was for some serious monies. Apparantly it gives you a stink that you can't wash off.

I go to Toronto all the time, and it smells really bad anyways. I doubt this will make a difference.

:O That's where I lived when I was in TO. Probably the only bearable part of the city.

Actually I watched a pretty good documentary on that and the premise that the people who hate Toronto the most were Torontonians themselves :D

Hey, I lived there for 2 years and am going to marry a girl from there. At least I have empirical evidence that Toronto sucks.
