Toronto is Inferior, Mississauga being one of the GTA Exceptions to 'Doing it rite' to a degree.

I'm in London a quick drive away(depending on traffic/time of day on the 401), and it smells fucking great here, but the city itself kind of sucks though anymore.

It's a job that requires little training, no education, and you can even go to work smelling like shit and nobody would care. Yeah, not many people on these boards would do it, but since we're all using computers and playing FFXI we're not exactly the type of people who would do this.

Go to NYC, grab a busload of homeless people and I bet they'd do it for $25 a day as long as they can dig through the trash at the end of their shift. They pretty much do it for free anyway.

I don't know if two years counts as 'empirical evidence'; I have lived here all of my life and I still haven't seen all there is in this city. I really like the diversity, usual cleanliness, etc... but not the price of everything. Too goddamned expensive.

Toronto is the best. I'm marrying a girl from there, so you know, that makes it a fact.

But seriously, this is really not the time to be pulling that striking crap. Engineers are flipping burgers while garbage men (who are paid decently, mind you) are refusing to work until they get a 5-7% raise? It does not work like that. People are getting paid ridiculously low wages in relation to their skill-levels... though garbage men make a decent amount considering their jobs are low-skill, although they are also low demand (though, I don't know if that holds true in this economy). Not to mention the obvious health hazards. New Jersey is gonna look a whole lot better after Torontonian Flu.

Canada should do what America has done with it's trash business. Sell it to the mafia.

Garbage men, errr Sanitation Workers (engineers as some say) make bank, at least where I've lived. Don't let their looks fool you, they get paid pretty nice.

One of the things I liked most about that place was how it was a big city and it was still clean.

That's what a lot of people, and money-bringing tourists, like about the city. I understand the need for strikes, I really do, but again, it's a health issue and it messes up the economy for everyone else. I'm sure a lot of small-business owners are under a lot of financial pressure as it is and they rely on summer tourism and events that are now cancelled because of the strike. Still on the fence about this.

One of the first things I recognized about Toronto was how fresh the air was. I cannot comprehend how shocking foul air must be after living in such an environment for so long. I say meet the demands, waste disposal, though not as brutal as it used to be is a tough job.

I don't think it has anything to do with "allowed to strike". I do not know the local laws on the right to assemble but you cannot force people to go to work if they are angry enough to decide to stop in the first place. Well outside of violence and slavery.

Finally, I've been waiting for a thread about this to pop up. I live in Windsor (four hours south of Toronto for those that don't know) where this strike started almost three months ago. Our cabs and city workers have also been on strike for just as long and it's starting to get pretty crazy.

The grass on most city owned property is 1-2 feet tall, including parks, playgrounds, soccer fields, etc. People that live near places like this try to help and give the kids somewhere to play, especially now that school is done for the summer, by cutting it themselves. But city workers get in their faces and try to stop them and eventually start fights so bad that police have to be called and people often get arrested. Garbage cans everywhere are overflowing into the sidewalks and streets and stink horribly. There's huge six foot high piles of garbage bags just sitting on street corners and next to bus stops. People that try and help by picking up garbage also get harassed by city workers. There was a video on the news not too long ago of an elderly couple picking up garbage with their grandchild, when a city worker comes up to them and says "So you want to do our job eh? Well here's some more" and dumps a garbage bag full of crap on the ground in front of them. City councilors are getting their tires slashed right in their driveways at home, the mayors home phone number was put in everyone's mail box with a message basically saying to call and bug him.

I could go on all day talking about how bad this is getting and all the stuff going on. On top of all that, the google street view car actually just went around here last week for the first time, great time to take pictures of the city lol.
