I think this was a good idea. The over specialization of all the previous forums just complicated things especially in regard to standard/advanced. Advanced had become nothing but a stagnant pool for jaded ego-less nerds to harass each other. I think some kind of distinction like "News and New Developments" might be a better forum name than "advanced", as calling something "advanced" is just rife for ridicule amongst so many nihilistic twats. And it's more or less where all the new info from updates and happenings take place, while other forums rehash known info or questions.

The Events section has been extremely helpful in the past, not quite to the extent of Randomer Question/What's Better, but still it was my go-to when I could not seem to find a working strategy for something on my own.

if anything advanced should've been deleted and the few important threads could've been moved to standard imo

standard and events were way more used than wotg section, but now to make up for it we have...wotg crafting and wotg pankration! oh sorry, wotg and misc.

it seems a little cramped to me, when an originally ffxi board now has a whopping one section for actual gamplay discussion. also seems like it will invite a looot more derp threads for mods to have to lock, which i guess will give me a good laugh with my breakfast.

^This. A thread, even a short-lived one, draws attention, gets answered, and goes away. I've had questions go unanwered in the random question section. A post in a massive random question thread is anonymous. There should be a way to flag posted questions as "answered" and "unanswered" in the random questions thread. Further, a forum that divides itself into titled threads is an organized way to go about gathering information, whereas a large thread is inefficient.

^This. I very much enjoyed the civil tone of the standard section, as well as the idea that all questions and concerns are valid and deserve productive answers. It takes courage to admit you don’t know something or are confused, and people should be lauded, not discouraged, for asking.

Reading the Standard Section became a daily routine for me. I’m sad to see it go. I feel like I’m at a funeral.

I personally preferred Standard, as well. I am unsure as to what the goal of the merge was:

    a) eliminate the "This is Advanced?" mindset and merge Standard in (i.e. Advanced is the new Standard)
    b) eliminate the kind of posts that Standard was created for (i.e. Standard is viewed as a failed experiment)

Advanced was supposed to have advanced topics with "sharks" in it. I guess most people, especially somewhat newer posters ignored the "advanced topics" part and even for regular posters "standard" became the new advanced. Or what advanced was supposed to be.

Merging two sections was a good move, in my opinion. I don't think a "where should I level" question every now and then will be bothersome at all.

I think the distinction that "advanced" had compared to standard was more of an "elitest" vs non-elitist attitude. If a thread seemed to not conform to a handful of people's opinion on it's validity to be in that section, I myself saw it more like elitism vs this topic isnt advanced. Like a lot of BRP's examples quoted in Kaeko's post, it's all subjective.

This is my big hangup about it personally. Although I guess it makes sense cause half the people who post on BG don't actually play FFXI anymore.

So.. why does it have to be called advanced? Why not just FFXI: General Discussion

I gist I got from the posts the mods have made is that BG is no longer a place for general discussion.

    This.

In general, in the last few months the only things I've seen pass through advanced worth reading are the News Updates. Can't think of a real thread at all... but I might be forgetting some.

I think this is the general idea.

    1. Only start threads if they really are necessary or helpful.
    2. Try to be courteous to everyone when posting.
