Must have games differ from person to person. There is no universal must have game. If you would buy a game a third+ time then it is a must have for you.

I stumbled across something your Sonic nerdiness may appreciate Kohan, although you may have seen it by now.

Behind every great game is a even greater Atlus title.

Well... at least you're right about them being behind.

Atlus developed titles that aren't Wizardry clones have been falling off lately.

"must have" is for all intents and purposes a synonym for "essential".

if that's not obvious and/or you don't know what essential means and you don't understand the difference between essential and really good/great, kill yourself and stop trying to over-intellectualize your gamin opinions/put yourself on a fucking pedestal.

The entire point is that there's no such thing as an 'essential' game.

it's pretty easy to list essential games. what are the landmark or library-standout games? what games do people think of when you mention a system? examples (incomplete lists naturally):

Super Nintendo: Mario Kart, Link to the Past
Playstation: Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, Gran Turismo, maybe a Crash Bandicoot game
N64: Goldeneye, Super Mario 64, Starfox

and so on. it doesn't necessarily mean the best games (I didn't list Vagrant Story and FFT on PS for a reason), it just means what are the essentials of the system's library. that is determined to a fairly large degree by sales/popularity, but generally the games are good enough to earn it. the games also may define certain styles or themes of the library; for example FF7 exemplifies the kind of JRPG that made up a strong part of the PS library.

    not that fucking hard.

I think the notion of a singular standout game that justifies or even warrants a system purchase is, as I think I mentioned elsewhere, something of an antiquated notion. I really can't think of one for any system past N64 or PS1, it seems more like as gaming has grown bigger and bigger the "essentials" has become a group of games instead of any one title, especially if you're talking about exclusives.

For example, for 360 there isn't one single game I can think of that would make you buy the system, not even Halo 3 is that good, but if you're a shooter fan you're probably going to buy a 360 for Halo AND Gears of War AND whatever else interests you.

It seems like we've gotten to the point that libraries and games are so numerous and varied that "essentials" can mean a lot of different things to different people.

it's not "what games make you buy the system" it's "so I've got the system, what are the essential games in it's library?"

Doesn't have to be essential to be recommended as such.

isn't it more or less the same thing? I get what you're saying but you're not gonna go out and buy a system unless there's at least 3-4 games on it you want to play, as opposed to just 1 a few generations ago.

Anyway I don't want to get into a semantic debate and I do see your point, honestly I bought my ps3 and waited 6 months before buying any games for it, and I didn't regret the purchase at all.

Actually come to think of it I bought Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom and played for about 3 hours and regretted buying that but yea
