Money, money, money, money, money.
Join social LSs and explore.
Be on the lookout for ways to take advantage of the economy.
Look for what may become contested NMs like Lizzy/Emperor.
Form/join a (future) HNMLS, and focus on reaching HNM capabilities from the start.
Money, money, money, money, money.

Oh wait, we're not doing songs.
As important as the economy is bound to be, I truly hope there'll be more of a balance in terms of equipment acquisition.
I suppose another thing would be to get into crafting early. I always found myself broke because I didn't have a specific craft to make money from. Yeah, money is definitely the way to go.
I want to explore everything but I think I will take my time leveling and focus on crafting and taking advantage of the economy.
Being a crafting powerhouse in ffxi was more than just having gil. I liked the game most right after the few times I found a way to get buckets of gil.
However, I was someone who got the short end a few times - like 2M+ on a talon then taking a 2 month break to find the weskit costing 19k, rinse, repeat on like 20 other pieces of armor/weapons. I think I had one mule completely full of worthless alumine at one point, and plat ingots that would lose 100k/ea at another.
This would make me super reluctant to get too attached to making gil early in the game. Even crafting seems dangerous to me (with my ingot experiences). Leveling up a my character and getting a good LS are sure-fire ways of making the most out of your time early in the game!
I don't know what I will do exactly because we don't know yet how the game would be , what I know for sure is that I wont set a goal and just mess around with freinds whenever I have free time. setting goals = addiction. at least to me
Become the RMT.
Level up asap, and find a way to make money asap. I started in the XBOX release, so upon starting the game i was way behind 60% of other players. Listening to stories of how easy it was to make gil when the game was released. So planning on getting into a social LS, level as fast as i can.
Meanwhile finding a few ways to make gil rapidly for about the first year. Hoping that can carry me a long way, and set the ground work for not being broke from then on out. Maybe some crafting, fishing, things like that.
Then after a year or so get into some endgame.
Fish....
There also is a good shot I will only lvl one job in this game. In FFXI i have lvled 5 job, (rdm blm smn whm sam)
whm was my 1st had a blast. Followed that up with smn(<3 the job lvling sucked), moved on to blm, pre ToAU so I had fun. Then i lvled sam. It was fun and is my main job if anyone was to ask. But shit got old. I hate to even merit now. Sam i lvled back in 07 I think. In that time I have taken bard to 62 and pld to 40. I just can not get into lvling anymore I do not find it fun.
So my FF14 goal is
*Max fishing(E rod of that game as I have done in 11)
*lvl 1 job to the *cap* (My bet is a blm type of job)
*gear it as good as I can
If not immediately crafting to get a stranglehold on the economy, then leveling up as quickly as possible for the HNM scene
I plan to level a craft casually, as I think it's a great investment, and can give me something to do in any down time there may be(waiting for friends to log on, or work in an hour and don't want to get started on anything big). My main goal/plan isn't too much different then how I went about FFXI though, advance in missions/story while I slowly make my way to the level cap.
Let's see...level (or however they are gonna do the advancing system in this game) my favorite job of the bunch. Explore and interact with the story while doing so. I'm assuming I will have fun doing those three things. My eventual goal will be phat loots for the job I chose, but I doubt I will devote too much time to that.
as long as they don't make the mistake of letting players decide what items sell for we shouldn't need to spend mad amounts of time amassing large quantities of gil, which should let us...oh...i dunno...focus on doing all of the content at the same time instead of like half of it?

dolla dolla bill ya'll
I can't wait for FFXIV. It's gonna be so exciting Although, I wish it were not set in some new world rather than Vanadiel. That bugs me quite a bit. I'm gonna miss Jeuno, and all the other towns.
Any confirmation on the playable races? Fomor?
1. Find the AH at the very beginning
2. Don't sell my crystals to a vendor
3. Don't sell any items to a vendor
Fomor? Somehow I don't think that will be an option as they're soulless shadows of beings >.>
Playable races look like the same races in FFXI with minor differences (tarus don't look exactly the same, but there is still a race of midgets) and you can clearly see galkas, humes and mithras in the trailer, and tons of pointy eared things in the concept art.
