I have a simple answer for why I don't like rap. It's just not my style. I like actual singing rather than talking to a beat. Thats a pretty generic statement and I know people who like rap will say its more than that, but that's the only way I can describe the style since I'm not well versed in that music.

I've never heard a rap song that was interesting from a technical, musical point of view. I hear a lot of heavy bass and an endless stream of hooks, but rarely anything actually coherent or innovative. I'm bored by the subject matter and unimpressed by the medium itself, which involves a ton of digital manipulation and almost no actual instruments.

(I'd also clarify that this doesn't mean I actually prefer rock to rap, I put them on the same field more or less. But at least rock has a few shining stars, like Pink Floyd, or Explosions in the Sky, that set themselves apart from the rest of its medium. The images portrayed by rappers in the media are what corporate cracker ass crackers. The thick dookie ropes, Kangols to the side, saying "yo, yo, yo" every 3rd word etc.. is white peoples interpretation of rap and rappers.

Those are the ones I dislike, which is why there's very few that I actually listen to on my own time.

You obviously haven't heard enough old school rap. Coming from a musician some of it was actually pretty fucking amazing. Not only that but they rapped about real shit, back when rap had more of a blues influence, I guess it just lost that over the years

I'm always willing to be proved wrong when it comes to music, but this just doesn't jive with my experience. The thing I found refreshing about old school rap is what you refered to, how it's about real shit. The Message comes to mind. A really good rap in literary terms, but repetitious and essentially talentless musically.

For me the standard of interesting is set very high. I'm talking fucking Shostakovich, Chopin, late period Beethoven, people who really moved music forward in a tangible way. To me a stand out artist or group is stand out because they are identifiable, the way when you listen to Chopin you know you are listening to Chopin and not, say, John Field. You know when you hear Pink Floyd. Hearing other bands you know that they are playing blues, or a jazz/rock fusion. They aren't bad, but they don't have something distinguishing. Even having contextualized rap with a fairly decent study of it for a whitey who's disinterested in its content or purpose, I don't find the same uniqueness in rap. Any stand out track is identifiable mostly by its hooks, but the artist that arranged it is interchangeable. I think this is mostly a function of the way it's composed, digitally for the most part. It's a very glaring weakness.

I'm talking lyrically. You're comparing apples to oranges, and I know what you mean, being a huge fucking fan of Pink Floyd, they're in their own category, comparing them to rappers from a technical music standpoint is silly, Chopin and Beethoven even more so, lol. But yeah if you are more in it for the instruments, then Rap isn't really for you, but going in to the roots of it, Blues music is that sort of thing. Rap is (well, it was) more about vocally expressing through lyrics.

Well yeah, I was talking about the music itself in my original post.

Lyrically it's hit and miss, and I prefer instrumentals anyway.

I think though, that if rap is considered music, then it is fair to make a comparison to floyd and beethoven. Music is music, being a certain genre doesn't exempt you from being compared to others.

The thing is we hate those types too. This is what Charismatic and I go back in forth with when I fuck with him about Houston music which is fucking trash. He agrees, you just have to find what you like and go with that sound.

That is sort of like listening to a Goo Goo Dolls or a shitty Natalie Merchant record and swearing off Rock forever because its pussy music. "Hey Bro I hate metal, I saw Panic! at the Disco in concert and it totally turned me off".
