    Nvidia Ion

Whats everyone's take on the new tech coming out?

    Nvidia Ion Reference PC

I'd go crazy if I could get that reference pc they list there to put in my car. As far as I can tell they don't plan on selling it

    Here's some more info
NVIDIA shows off Ion Windows 7 multitasking, confirms launch details

The only other PC I've seen lately that had a very underwhelming performance using the technology is the Acer Asprire Revo.

Seems that we may actually get some releases using the technology soon.

I know I haven't seen a carputer thread on these forums. Anyone else intrigued by this? Articles say should be in the 300~ range which is pretty damn cheap as well.

It's stuff like this that'll essentially make netbooks as powerful as mid-range notebooks, I personally can't wait for something small and light-weight that runs WoW/FFXI/TF2 no problem.

I'm more impressed by what video it can play/output for netbooks now. Allowing HD on netbooks is a huge step. As an article I read a day or two ago said netbooks and notebooks are going to merge, and there will no longer be netbooks.

TG Daily (c) - The death of the netbook

Not saying I agree with them dieing and going away. I just see the line between netbook and small notebook merging.

It's a nice thought to think that even in the coming months we'll be seeing more and more tech using this platform, which makes little notebooks/netbooks even more powerful. I'm contemplating getting a little 10" netbook type thing for university, and the fact that they might be capable of running full HD movies, playback 3D games and other graphics intensive things, on top of the regular ability to surf the net, type word documents and the like is really great.

The reference PC looks good too as an alternative to things like the Apple TV and other PVRs, it looks even better actually considering that it runs a full OS, not just a stripped down version with a handy GUI for TVs. I imagine we'll be seeing a lot more (and a lot cheaper!) media computers using this technology.

Wish they would sell that reference PC. It's exactly what I'm looking for for my car

What are you guys referring to when you say HD movies btw. For me it means full 1080p, but something like that is wasted when netbooks sport a supbar resolution. (usually 800x480/1024x600)

If they had an HDMI-out, maybe, but then it'd just be a portable playback unit, to which you'd still need something large to hook it up to.

The unit listed above does indeed have HDMI out, as well as DVI. The point is we're not limited in our choices. Right now if you wanted to you couldn't/can't play 720p let alone 1080p on a netbook.

    Intel - Motherboards - Products

Zotac appears to be releasing motherboards w/ cpu included (I believe). I personally have never seen a atom cpu sold on its own anywhere which leads me to believe it comes with the board.

Anyway, there are 4 of the boards to choose from, 2 dual cores, 2 single cores. Also, both dual cores appear to come with wifi connections as well, as the single core(original models?) do not. (well the pictures don't show it, in the package contents it lists wifi bracket)

ZOTAC IONITX-D-E Atom N330 1.6GHz Dual-Core Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
ZOTAC IONITX-A-U Atom N330 1.6GHz Dual-Core Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

ZOTAC IONITX-C-U Atom N230 1.6GHz Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
ZOTAC IONITX-B-E Atom N230 1.6GHz Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

Anyway the price of these (if they do come with a processor, on newegg it says they are bundled w/ processor) is between 150~250 USD which is not bad. Dual cores not for sale yet on amazon apparently they are revising it and amazon hasn't gotten a new shipment but its $189 free shipping.

Pretty nifty, after seeing some responses of people I'll probably pick one up.
