With frame links, move cancels, guard and combo breaks, aerial grabs, anti aerials, and what the fuck else is present in current gen fighters if you're not aiming to be as technical as you can you're blatantly amateur.

I guess my comment about not playing technically was off. I don't think anyone I've played in fighting games or myself doesn't do most of the shit you listed. I don't play with pros so I've never gone out of my way to master shit, especially considering I was generally the best player out of the circle of people I played fighting games with. Besides, I haven't even said that Brawl isn't technical, I know plenty about "advanced techniques" in Brawl and Melee (no, I'm not gonna be stupid and claim to know as much as you about that), but I don't personally consider shit like utilizing DI and cancelling "being technical". Semantics.

Momentum canceling and DI are not technical, theyre just proper decision making on the fly and at the very most in relation to technicality can be considered good reflexes, you hit a middle man when you get to shit like power shielding a full on spam approach to reduce shield drop lag by 3 frames every time, and you get to technical stuff when you get to snake fully utilizing his trap and grenade game. It's when I drop a jab to bair to KO marth on ike despite that if he DIed towards the ground he could have dragon punched the fuck out of me for it (Ike being a decidedly NON technical character). It's marth understanding the DI of his opponent to create true combos out of small 2 frame windows to properly follow up in a game that people normally think doesnt have combos. Diddy, Ice climbers, pikachu, dribbling and air catches, alternating chain grabs, quick attack cancels and locks. The game has a slew of technicality, but no shit there are non technical characters in the slew too, dedede being the most blatant example of autopilot and maybe good mindgames winning you a match.

Only fighting game I ever learned shit in was GGX2, and my friends never did anything besides button mash and as soon as I learned anything beyond that they stopped playing with me. I don't know how anybody actually finds a group of people who all care about playing enough to be decent and not get bored playing against each other. I certainly would like one.

If you play Virtua Fighter with your friends and all you do is spam buttons in hopes that they chain together, that's one environment.
