Do I need these extra versions?

So. Was cleaning out things via program list today, and noticed I had extra versions of Microsoft .NET Framework installed, taking up more space.

I was wondering if it would be possible to remove the 2.0, and just leave the 3.0 (or 3.5, even though it's only 25MB) by chance. Or would it throw off the entire balance of the solar system. Not that I'm opposed to that.

I'm fairly certain that some programs will require a specific version, and that they're not superceded by newer versions. If you don't really need the space I'd leave them all.

I actually have a situation like that as well with multiple versions of .NET Framework that I got from installing stuff/upgrading to SP3, etc. I'd like an answer too, but part of me says that some versions are used by different programs, so I'll just not bother. D:

.Net frameworks are not 100% backwards compatible, so it's in your best intentions to keep them all on.

Alright, guess the best idea would be to keep them I suppose. I mean, I'm not scrambling for space, still have a good amount of it. Just enjoy the occasional cleanup. ^^

I just remember when the frameworks were only 20mb.....when the hell did they shoot up to 300mb total?
(3.0 is an add-on to 2.0, thus the need to keep 2.0)

With Java if you have updates and you uninstall lower numbered updates the newer ones may not work. I believe they are built on upgrading and not individually sound when you update them. You'd need to remove them all and simply install the newest version.

Some java applets/applications require specific versions of a runtime. You always want to check the applets to see if they will be broken by an upgrade.

Same deal with .Net frameworks. Some applications require specific versions of the framework to be installed.
