I'll probably be getting a medium so I can eat half for dinner and take the other half for lunch at work (gotta be frugal). I'll be staying away from the nationwide chains like Dominos etc. I have no idea if I will even be able to stomach that much pizza for that long, but it's worth a shot (I am guessing day 5 will be the wall). Thanks for the tips! Unfortunatly, the nearst Papa John's is half an hour away from where I live Maybe on the weekend I'll hit it up though!

    Stay away from Dominos.

Pizza Hut tastes horrible the next day, at least in my experience.

Try the smaller businesses, they usually don't dissapoint, at least around here they don't.

New York/New Haven style > Chicago.

    /thread

even if Chicago is delicious, after like 2 slices you want to die/have probably eaten more calories than an entire thin crust pizza.

I'd say there's too much Papa John's praise in this thread, but it's been made clear that this is compared to other extremely common nationwide chains. In that regard, I'll agree. Basically, it's conceding that even if their shit smells a little less disgusting than the other guy's, it's still crap at the end of the day. The primary reason is their terrible, flavorless crust. Their garlic sauce -- which used to be a superior, liquified butter and garlic combination -- spices it up, but that should not be required.

The aforementioned recommendation of extra tomatoes is very sound to me. Vegetables in general can be a good indicator of ingredient quality, as uniform (and thus likely pre-frozen) goods aren't as nice as, say, batches of veggies prepared daily. Anything that's wilted, small, etc., is undesirable. Many seasoned/aged meats, like sausage for example, tend to have an overpowering flavor that mutes out accompanying, subtler tastes.

Personally, I'd think a margherita pie would be the best demonstration of a pizzeria's skills.

oh my god THANK YOU and others who have said giordano's

they don't have one here but I was in Tampa a few months back and ate there and seriously the greatest pizza ever. if you like deep dish you really can't do better.

but I didn't remember the name of it and it bugged me for soooo long and now that I remember I'm so ordering on to get delivered to me. I don't care if it's 50 dollars it'll feed me for a week.

    well

have any of you had it delivered? does it still taste good after being frozen?

no pizza should be bad if you heat it in the oven the next day and don't overheat it. I do love the deep dish pizzas from pizza hut. NY style italian pizza is the best pizza though, end of story.

Just so it can be said, Providence RI also has some decent pizza spots, notably Casertas on Federal Hill and Pizza Pie-er on Wickenden.

Just avoid pizza places with unimaginative names or "(town name) Pizza", or "(name of some guy)'s Pizza".

A good name means a good pizza!

If you're getting stuff from mom and pop places, I'd recommend against ordering things like half cheese half deluxe. I worked at one in college, with brick ovens (not a conveyor belt), and it's damn near impossible to fully cook the deluxe side without burning the cheese on the other side.

If the sausage is sliced, the pizza is nice. If the sausage is ground, put the pie down.

heh. love sliced to death. Also, the best way to compare pizzas is to eat them.

Does the pizza have cheese in its crust?

    If yes, then it's good.

    If no, then it's bad.

Wasn't a fan of pizza hut stuffed crust pizza, but I'm very willing to find another joint if it's available.
