It's not worth anyone's trouble to start releasing software on alternative OSs, and I don't see anyone considering it in the near future. 'Be' would be around still if it was.

The main problem with a new OS like that is it will be a while before software is available for it. Like FFXI for GoogleOS, or Photoshop, productivity software, Firefox, various games, and other software to suit your specific hobbies/needs.

Will major software developers start releasing their flagship software on GoogleOS, in addition to Windows and Mac? Will computer manufacturers ship new high end desktops with GoogleOS as an option, like some have done with Ubuntu?

I am not well versed in the functionality of OS but isn't there a way for someone to create their own open source custom OS but still have it be compatible with any program that works with windows? Or would that require infringing on proprietary MS stuff?

you would have to recreate the windows api, bugs, feature, undocumented behaviour etc, it's what wine tries to do, but all in a sandboxed-userspace.

i expect them to push web applications like google wave as the main type of application.

if chrome was a clone, it would be a clone of safari, which would be a clone of konqueror, but fork would be a more appropriate word since they are different. it has a different rendering engine, security/plugin model, and javascript engine than ff.

Maybe instead of repeatedly pointing out that Chrome isn't Firefox, one of you could explain why it's better than Firefox.

Bonus points if you do so in programmer jargon that boils down to a difference imperceptible to 99% of end users.

i just said it was different. different does not imply better (or worse). i don't use it because there isn't a linux build and because you can't ctrl+t to a blank page.

That's odd, because that shortcut combo does open a new tab for me. What'did'ya mean by blank page? You set the option of what a new tab does in the options, so it can load a blank page if you want it to do so, but the default is the checkerboard page of your history.


I honestly don't mind the Chrome browser. Its a great light browser. It is not as customizable as FireFox, and for that reason many people used to FF are going to avoid it. However, that doesn't discredit it from being a good lightweight fast browser. I have some issues with it due to how it handles certain webpages, but overall, I don't have any problems with it, and I'd much rather see someone using Chrome than IE if they weren't using FF, wouldn't you?

I use chrome, and I really can't say it's better or worse than FF, but I'm just a fan of the checkerboard new tab and I've got a raging hardon for google.

Why should I care how it works other than for some pretentious self-gratification? It change the end result, which is that it doesn't do anything Firefox doesn't, while Firefox has an active community that develops awesome plugins.

By my logic, Chrome is mediocre because it was released more than 2 years after Firefox 2 and still manages to be less functional.

Technology behind it is important. The engine they use for rendering is way way faster then Firefox and anyone who uses it will notice this. A tab that crashes does not crash the whole browser like the way it does for firefox. Incognito mode in Chrome is really useful if you don't want other people to see your browsing history.

Only reason I haven't fully migrated to Chrome is the lack of an adblock plugin.

If the OS is to be created for netbooks, I doubt any real heavy computing things/gaming would be an issue.

I use both firefox and chrome, but I prefer chrome. I like how slim it is, I dont need a lot of firefox plugins, I've only used adblock+ and noscript there anyways. I can probably find a way to get firefox slim like chrome, but cant be bothered. The only issue I have is that for some reason, it doesnt work while Aion is playing, if I alt-tab.

I try to use Chrome 100%, but it's impossible as of yet. I love it as a browser, but there is still a problem with some streaming extensions, especially when the stream requires a password. I also have flash issues with some specific sites, for which I still use FF...

i use chrome and firefox.. lately ive been using chrome though cuz its faster. firefox still has the better features but i just use chrome for simplicity and speed.
i only use firefox nowdays to download music with download helper.

and porn works better with chrome. especially incognito mode haha
