Been reading a few other places and this seems to be a fake image. The link to where the image is hosted (http://sinopon555.fileave.com/FFXIV/FFIV_BETA.jpg) clearly misspells FFXIV and the general lack of any other word from SE just helps lend to this being a very likely fake.

I'm intrigued to see if there's an NA beta period starting up at the same time.

It doesn't say NAs can't apply for beta. No way for them to tell from your email that you're not from Japan anyway, even if it did matter to them. At least, not until after you've been notified by email and allowed to download the beta.

Given it's Japan, they could just IP-block anyone outside of it, and hell, they could send the mail in person also to confirm you're a Japanese resident if they were anal enough to do so.

It's been over a day now since this "announcement" was found out and yet there's been absolutely no official word from SE, and I seriously doubt that they wouldn't do a big news release about a beta test period. It'd be nice for some new info to come out but I doubt anything worthwhile will be heard until TGS in Sept.
